The statue is a tribute to the field brickworks that were once active in Meilegem. This artisanal industry was an important part of local economic life. The last brickworks closed in 1990, and the statue commemorates this tradition of hard, artisanal work.

The Kaaihoeve is located in an 18th-century farmhouse that originally served as a transshipment point on an old Scheldt branch. Coal and lime were transported here via the Scheldt from Tournai.

A little bit of Switzerland in Flanders Somewhere in the Zwalm valley, hidden among the forests, lies Klein Zwitserland – OHNE's forest bar, a fairytale cottage surrounded by water and greenery and with a wealth of historical information. Klein Zwitserland has been a household name in Zwalm and beyond for years. In the early 20th century, the building on Galerijpad served as a lock keeper's house. The lock house was also converted into an inn. The name chosen for the inn was "Little Switzerland" because the lock keeper, in his imagination, compared this place to Switzerland: "My little pond is Lake Geneva, the hills are the Swiss mountains, and when the locks are open, I have a waterfall. This is simply Switzerland in miniature."
