A colorful discovery for artists and admirers. Historical context: In the late 1960s, the Mechelen city council wanted to build a conference center at this location. The location was ideal, with the E19 motorway nearby. One problem: there was no significant conference infrastructure. Several Belgian entrepreneurs were willing to build and operate the complex. The building was to have 18 floors, including meeting rooms, restaurants, and hotel rooms. Construction began in 1972 but was soon halted. According to some sources, this was because the building subsided into the marshy subsoil, while others attributed it to a lack of financing. The project went horribly wrong. The shell was only two stories high. For over 50 years, nature has been given free rein. All sorts of rare animals and plants now live in and around the ruins. A boardwalk leads to the first floor of the shell. Enjoy the many street art works without disturbing the natural environment. You can also literally climb this highlight from this level via a staircase to a viewpoint. Admire and marvel at how nature and street art artists breathe new life into this site.

The Rotbos is part of De Groene Vallei, a 500-hectare green oasis of protected nature between Brussels, Mechelen, and Leuven. This beautiful forest is situated along the Dode Beek stream. It is a richly diverse forest composed of all kinds of deciduous trees. (Pasar)

Did you know that there is a hotel ruin in the Vrijbroekpark? In the 70s, the construction of this hotel was stopped after two floors. For several decades, nature was given free rein at this location. Since 2025, you can enjoy the fauna & flora, the street art and the mysterious atmosphere on the ruin. As a highlight of your visit, you can take the stairs to the viewing platform on the roof.

Boortmeerbeek station is a railway station in the municipality of Boortmeerbeek on railway line 53 (Schellebelle - Mechelen - Leuven). It is now a stop. Boortmeerbeek station was opened on 10 February 1859 by the Belgian state railways. At the station there is a memorial plaque commemorating the attack on the Twentieth train convoy (1943). The station building was built in the 1970s in the same style as the station building in Haacht. The ticket offices in the station are closed. In March 2020, the station building was demolished. A covered bicycle shed was built in its place.

At this point the Barebeek flows into the Dijle. The Barebeek valley lets you enjoy a wide and varied landscape. Old pollard willows form beautiful lines in the landscape. Little owls like to nest in the hollows of the old pollard willows. In the valley of the Barebeek you can regularly spot storks where they find a lot of food. They hunt for snails, earthworms, frogs and mice in the valley.

Here we always have the nature of Elewijt nearby. These fields are the realm of lapwings, larks, pheasants, partridges, kestrels, buzzards etc. In early spring we can see lapwings winging and conquer a territory and a female with their antics. Larks go up twinkling until there is only a dot to be seen, after which they fall from the sky like a stone. It is not surprising that we see so much life here because we are on the edge of the Steentjesbos. This is the realm of blackbirds, robins, finch, nuthatch, wren, green and spotted woodpeckers, blue tits, great tits, etc. buzzards, tawny owls and black woodpeckers also come here to breed. They find sufficient shelter, food and nesting opportunities in the forest. In the spring we find a rich spring flora of, among other things, celandine, wood anemone, primrose, ground ivy, etc. In the winter period, many species find a good wintering place here. The Steentjesbos is, just like the Schiplakenbos and the Snijsselsbos, a remnant of the former Brabant coal forest. There was probably already a forest here in the 12th century. It is certain that reforestation has been carried out since around 1850. Thanks to the great diversity of flora and fauna, this forest is a gem in the region. Together with the domain of Sport Vlaanderen in Hofstade, the Schiplakenbos and the Snijsselsbos, the Steentjesbos forms a natural connection area with valuable to very valuable nature that must be preserved and protected. Eppegem station is a railway station along railway line 25 and railway line 27 (Brussels - Antwerp) near the village of Eppegem in the Belgian municipality of Zemst. The station building is of the standard type 1895. In 1904, it replaced an older station that was built in 1881 by the Brussels-North Group. Nine stations of this type were built, including Sint-Katelijne-Waver Station (demolished in 1931), Dilbeek Station and Sint-Martens-Bodegem Station. The station building dating from 1904 was sold in 2002. It was renovated by the new owner, and is partly used as a single-family home and partly as an ice cream shop. Since the beginning of 2008, covered bicycle sheds have been added for passengers.

The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-Over-de-Dijle Church dates from the fourteenth century and is home to many beautiful art treasures. You will find a complete carillon in the tower with no fewer than 49 bells and you can also view a unique work of art by Rubens, the painting The Miraculous Catch of Fish. https://www.reisroutes.be/blog/mechelen/mooiste-bezienswaardeheden-mechelen/#de_onze_lieve_vrouwe_over_de_dijlekerk

Monument Transport XX A gun, a storm lamp and some red paper. With this meager material, three young Brussels resistance fighters attacked a train on the Mechelen - Leuven railway line in Boortmeerbeek on April 19, 1943. This train, the so-called XXe Transport, transported 1,638 Jewish citizens to Auschwitz. Ultimately, 231 prisoners were able to escape. Of these, 90 deportees were caught again and put on the next transport; 26 people were killed during their flight and 115 deportees succeeded in their escape. The attack is an important fact in the history of the Holocaust. After all, it is the only place in Europe where a liberation action was carried out on a transport of Jews during the Second World War To commemorate this fact, a memorial plaque was unveiled in 1993 in the parking lot next to the Boortmeerbeek town hall. In 2005, this memorial plaque was supplemented with a real monument. The Ghent sculptor Etienne Desmet has designed a sober column
