Great road and clean

Ten Houte means "at the wood, at the forest." Buggenhoutbos once extended all the way to Peizegem. During the Middle Ages, Ten Houte was a very important neighborhood. It was strategically located along the main road from Hainaut to the Scheldt (Briel). Ten Houte—now just the name of a street—was the last stop before travelers entered the large Buggenhoutbos. Ten Houte is the oldest residential area in Peizegem. (Information board a little further on)

The historic site of Hof ten Houte consists of a square, medieval residential tower, likely dating back to the second half of the 15th century (after 1468), and associated, now renovated, farm buildings. Originally the seat of a smaller lordship, the residential tower is a representative and well-preserved example of a noble residence from the heyday of this type of dwelling. The prestige of this tower-shaped building style came to the fore after the mid-15th century, at the expense of its original defensive character. (Inventory of Immovable Heritage)
