The Studentenfriedhof Langemark, also known as the German Military Cemetery in Langemark, is one of the most poignant cemeteries from the First World War . More than 44,000 German soldiers are buried here, including approximately 3,000 student volunteers from the 22nd to the 27th Reserve Corps . These young men died in October and November 1914 during the First Battle of Ypres. The cemetery owes its name to the large number of students among the fallen. Behind the monumental gate of pink Weserberg sandstone is a mass grave in which almost 25,000 unidentified soldiers rest. The four bronze soldier figures by the sculptor Emil Krieger give a special atmosphere to this gloomy place .

A remarkable anecdote about the Studentenfriedhof Langemark concerns the myth of the "singing students". According to a much-discussed story, the young German student volunteers were said to have sung the "Deutschlandlied" while marching to the front line on 10 November 1914. This image of singing, idealistic students going to their deaths was later reinforced by nationalist propaganda. In reality, the situation was probably much grimmer, with mud, fog and the cries of the wounded. However, this myth became a symbol of the sacrifice and idealism of the young soldiers, although it is important to look at this story critically.

An interesting anecdote about the Boezinge Lock is about the reconstruction after the First World War. The original lock was destroyed during the war, but during the reconstruction a special choice was made: the Atrecht sandstone that was used in the old lock was reused for the restoration of the Ypres Cloth Hall.
