The Studentenfriedhof Langemark, also known as the German Military Cemetery in Langemark, is one of the most poignant cemeteries from the First World War . More than 44,000 German soldiers are buried here, including approximately 3,000 student volunteers from the 22nd to the 27th Reserve Corps . Langemark was once on railway line 63, initially (1873) intended to connect Ostend with Armentières. However, the line was never built over its full length: the line ended in Ypres, while the Waasten-Armentières section was also constructed some distance further. Langemark station (with station master's house) dates from 1920. In 1955 the last passenger train passed through Langemark. The railway remained in use until 1988 for goods transport to and from the military domain of Houthulst. The building then served as a fire station until 2006. After the fire brigade moved, the building seemed threatened for a while and a plan was briefly put on the table to demolish the building to build social housing. In 2014, the local art circle was able to move into the building to work on a project surrounding the commemoration of the gas attacks on Langemark-Poelkapelle in 1915, the first in World War I. Monument unveiled in 2008 in honor of the battalion to which Harry Patch belonged, the 7th Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. In the early morning of August 16, 1917, this battalion crossed the flooded Steenbeek (exactly at this location). Harry Patch was seriously injured. After a year of rehabilitation, he was sent to the front in Ypres again in 2018.
