Of the Commanderie's original buildings, only the main building and part of the barn remain. Although the main building has been renovated numerous times, many original features remain, particularly on the west side. On this side, an impressive rose window on the upper floor of the gable can still be seen. The small building to the right of the main building, on the east side, is a chapel added after the transfer of the Templars' property to the Hospitallers. One hypothesis suggests that the chapel occupied the upper floor of the main building during the Templar era. In the 18th century, the building was largely destroyed by fire. The date on the roof indicates the year of reconstruction and demonstrates the reduction in volume of this part of the building after the fire. Source: templiers.org/saint-leger.html

A legend surrounds the Templars' presence in Saint-Léger: Just like everywhere else, the Templars of Saint-Léger were subject to the arrest warrant issued against them by Philip the Fair in 1307. According to a local legend, after the horseshoes had been removed from the horses, the commander ordered them to be reattached to the horses' hooves in reverse order. This task completed, the two soldiers left Saint-Léger without looking back. When the provost of Tournai, armed with royal decorations, arrived at the commandery with his men, he was shocked to see from the horses' tracks that a large number of horsemen had arrived to reinforce the local garrison. He therefore deemed it prudent to withdraw. When the ruse was discovered, the fugitives were already far away... Source: https://templiers.org/saint-leger.html

Saint-Léger boasts one of the best-preserved Templar commanderies in Flanders. This unprotected monument is built in the Scheldt Gothic style and is still used as a farm.

The penultimate cobbled section of Paris-Roubaix. I recommend doing part of it on the cobblestones to experience this very uncomfortable sensation (fortunately the cycle path is tarmac).

There were too many cars, even on a Friday afternoon, so I had to ride on the black edges when the cars came from behind. I'm looking forward to when this section is closed for a Paris-Roubaix weekend.

Located 13 km north of Tournai, the village of Saint-Léger in Hainaut is well known for the remains of a 13th-century Templar farm, a jewel of European medieval architecture. Saint-Léger was once one of the nine villages comprising the lordship of the Bishop of Tournai. But there were also Knights Templar in Saint-Léger! We know that the Order of the Temple, founded in 1118, organized itself into commanderies throughout Europe and raised significant funds, particularly to defend pilgrims in the Holy Land. The Commandery of Saint-Léger appears to have been one of the best-preserved in Europe. It consisted of a large manor house with bay windows, a chapel, and a stone barn located in the meadow in front of the farm. https://www.templiers.org/saint-leger.html
