The core of Horst Castle probably dates back to the 13th century and is characterised by a square keep. The keep probably belonged to the oldest core that was further expanded into a fortified castle in the 15th century. During the troubles under Maximilian of Austria in 1489, the castle of Horst was taken by the people of Leuven and set on fire. According to literary sources, only the keep, part of the entrance gate and a defensive wall remained standing. The residential and east wing were renovated and expanded in the 16th century. The round tower also dates from this period. The outer wall was provided with a rectangular bay window. The castle lost its military character and became more of a pleasant residential area with a view of the moat, the ponds and the inner courtyard. Brick construction with sandstone layers characterise these buildings. In 1587, however, the castle was set on fire again during the raids of the Geuzen. It was not until the beginning of the 17th century that restoration work began. It is difficult to deduce from the available sources to what extent this involved restoration or an embellishing conversion of the castle complex. Presumably nothing changed in the internal structure, but only after the structurally necessary repairs were the interiors completely refinished. Maria-Anna Van den Tympel had a new chapel built against the keep in the 17th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, the complex must have been damaged by plundering and neglect, and it is possible that it also suffered from plundering during the Brabant Revolution of 1830. Around 1850, the castle must have been habitable again, but the castle buildings only served as a farm. In the land registry, the site around the castle is called "De Notelaren Boomgaerd". Around that time, the most dilapidated part must have been demolished, namely the southern part and the superstructure of the gate. The rest of the complex was probably restored with reused demolition material and in traditional style. The castle was divided in 1880, with one part being registered as a school house. In 1897, a further division followed, with two plots being designated as houses. Several restoration campaigns followed in the 20th century. Since December, there has been a spire on the castle again after the unstable spire was removed more than four years ago and could be viewed on a wooden platform in the pond. Now it is back. And the other works are also progressing quickly. More about the replaced spire on https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2024/12/10/torenspits-staat-weer-op-kasteel-van-horst-holsbeek/

4월 12, 2025, Gempemolen Watermill
The Watermill on the Winge or Gempemolen was the abbey mill of the Norbertine nuns of Gempe, which was already mentioned in 1229 and has been in private hands since 1728. On 12 April 1944, the mill was protected as a monument. During this period, the miller's house was also known as a remote café. During the Second World War, a lot of milling was still done, but the activity slowly died out. After years of inactivity, the Brewery of Haacht bought the Gempemolen in the 1990s to convert the miller's house into a café after a thorough restoration. At the top of the "tower" various signs help you identify what exactly you can see in the distance. Among the various places that are indicated and that you can see, depending on the conditions (more in the photos): the cooling towers of Vilvoorde at 34.5 kilometers, the mine slag heaps of Beringen at 27.5 kilometers, the castle of Horst at 6 kilometers, and Cargill in Herent at 16.8 kilometers. Of course you can see more than that, if the weather is good and even more if you have binoculars with you.

Since 1974, the province of (Flemish) Brabant has owned the 120 hectare Vinne. In 2000 it was decided to transform the area into a lake again. Work started in 2004; the poplars were cleared and the groundwater level rose because drainage was largely stopped. The entire area is ideal for migratory birds. There are two theories for the formation of the great depression that is Vinne. According to the first theory, which was accepted until the 1960s, the formation must be located at the end of the last ice age. Initially, a side valley of the latter lay at the location of the current outlet of the Vinne to the (Kleine) Gete. The predecessors of the current Vinnebeek and the Sint-Odulphusbeek flowed into this small side valley. The Gete Valley was lower then than it is now. Due to the erosion of the Landenian sand, the depression of the Vinne was gradually formed. Afterwards, the valleys of central Belgium filled up with a thick layer of peat. This also gradually prevented the outflow of water from the Vinnedepression. During high tide, the water of the Kleine Gete could now flow into the depression. The sediment carried by this current was deposited where the current was slowed down by the stagnant Vinne water. In this way, a fan-shaped elevation was created at the location where the Vinnehoeve was later built. According to the second theory (Mullenders et al., 1969), the depression would be a periglacial phenomenon, more specifically a pingo. At this location the groundwater came close to the ground surface where it could freeze. This mass of ice expanded and pushed the ground upward. Due to the growth of this ice lens, the resulting hill grew and in warmer times the superficial material was washed away with melt water so that the relief was strengthened. When a definitive improvement in the climate occurred, the ice dome could melt away and deposit erosion material laterally. This created a depression in situ with high walls of erosion material all around. However, the large dimensions of this depression are difficult to reconcile with this history. The Vinne is a natural depression, almost completely enclosed by slopes. Only in one place in the west has the slope been broken and the Vinnedepression is connected to the Gete valley via a narrow outlet. At its widest point the Vinne is 1600 m, at its narrowest point 900 m. Immovable Heritage Inventory 2024: Het Vinne, https://id.erfgoed.net/erfgoedobjecten/300182

The Vinne is located on the territory of the merged municipality of Zoutleeuw, south of the hamlet of Ossenweg, just within the province of Flemish Brabant. To the east of it lies Limburg's Duras, also an anchorage. On the cabinet map of the Ferraris (1770-1778), the area - then still a large lake - was intersected from north to south by the border between the Duchy of Brabant and the Prince-Bishopric of Liège.
