The first church in Lichtervelde was probably founded by the Lords of Lichtervelde. In 1197 the church (altar) was mentioned for the first time and in 1204 the church was dedicated to Saint James the Greater. In 1583 the first Romanesque church was destroyed and burned down, probably by the Geuzen, only the tower remained standing. The church was rebuilt and is described by Sanderus in 1640. The small church was demolished in 1877 to make way for the current neo-Gothic church. Unfortunately it did not remain standing for long, in 1918 the tower was blown up by the Germans, a large part of the church was destroyed. The church was rebuilt as before. It is located directly east of the hamlet of De Leeuw. The Merkenveld joins the domain of Baesveld Castle (20 ha), private forests (22 ha) and the Doeveren nature reserve (57 ha), bringing the total area to approximately 110 ha. The Merkenveld, over 18 hectares, was purchased by the municipality of Zedelgem in the 1980s and has since been known as the Merkemveld Municipal Domain. The area is flowed by the Kerkebeek.
