The chapel was built in 1906, in neo-baroque style, by architect Vandamme. It replaced a smaller chapel from the 17th century, which had fallen into disrepair. The chapel is dedicated to Mary, and contains a miraculous statue of her from the 17th century. The chapel is a place of pilgrimage, where believers come for the healing power of Mary. The chapel also has a carillon, which plays a song every hour. From the chapel you have a beautiful view of the Dender valley and the Flemish Ardennes. The chapel is also known to cycling enthusiasts, because it is located near the Muur van Geraardsbergen, a famous hill in various cycling races. The chapel is often shown when the cyclists climb the Muur. The chapel is part of the annual folk festival Krakelingen en Tonnekensbrand, which is recognized as intangible cultural heritage.

The Raspaillebos is located on the steep eastern flank of the Bosberg witness hill. This beech forest is located in the very relief-rich landscape on the border of the Flemish Ardennes with the Pajottenland, with steep valley walls, rolling hills and deeply incised valleys. The 50 ha Raspaillebos, together with the Moerbekebos, the Karkoolbos and the Kluisbos, belongs to a 150 ha forest area on the flanks of the Bosberg. The Raspaillebos once belonged to a forest that was called 'Arduenna' by the Romans and was known as 'Kolenwoud' in the time of the Franks. This name originates from the Iron Age, when charcoal was burned en masse for the production of iron. The name of the forest is said to be derived from the term "rapaille" (scum) or from "raspe" (coppice). The old Flemish ‘raspe’ (planing, rasping) refers to the traditional coppice management in this forest. Every twelve to eighteen years, old stumps of trees and shrubs are cut down to the ground. New shoots shoot out of this, which continue to grow until the next felling. Numerous springs originate in the forest. A chapel, 't Juffrouwke, was built at one of these springs because the water was said to help with toothache. During the uprising of the people of Ghent in the 14th century at the time of Jacob and Filips van Artevelde, the rebels found support among some farmers from the region of Geraardsbergen and Ronse. The farmers were chased from their farms and found shelter in the Raspaille forest. This is how a gang of robbers came into being who made numerous raids from the forest in the castellany of Ath, Lessines and Vloesberg. Jan de Lichte and his gang are also said to have stayed here on several occasions. According to some sources, the forest owes its name to these villainous stories. The words ‘Raspeel’, ‘Rapaille’ and ‘Raplage’ all refer to ‘scum’.

Here you will find yourself in a piece of untouched and well-protected Geraardsbergen nature. The Karkoolbos actually consists of two parts, the Karkoolbos and the Moerbekebos. Both are located on the Bosberg, but they are separated by a road. The Moerbekebos is a mosaic of plots with different tree species. All in all, a rich biotope for various plant and animal communities. The southern Karkoolbos is mainly a beech forest. The Moerbekebos is home to a wide range of old forest plants such as wood anemone, wild hyacinth, wild garlic, wild daffodil, one berry and white clover sorrel. A golden-ash forest is developing at the springs. In the southern Karkoolbos, only spring bloomers can grow under the dense beech crowns. In the damp parts of the forest, brown frogs and common toads can be found. The large bird choir is also well represented. Unlike the Moerbekebos, the Karkoolbos has limited access and hunting is not allowed. There are maintenance activities, but otherwise nothing is being done. Guided walks led by the forest ranger are possible. For this you contact the Department of Forest and Green. A walking path of approximately 2.5 km runs through the Moerbekebos (forest learning path). https://www.knooppunter.com/domeinbos-karkoolbos

The hilly source deciduous forest is managed by 'vzw De Mark' (Nature Point department 'Markvallei') and consists mainly of oak, beech, chestnut and alder. The Kluysbos is characterized by spring bloomers such as wood anemone, wild hyacinth, wild garlic and marigold. In the Kluysbos lives, among others, Brandt's bat, common pipistrelle, lateflyer, buzzard, sparrow hawk, cuckoo, middle spotted woodpecker, bramblewren, sooty flycatcher, nuthatch, gloss head, matkop, blackthorn page, orange sandeye, brown sandeye. The Kluysbos is recognized as a European Natura 2000 area (Forests of the Flemish Ardennes and other South Flemish forests) and is part of the Flemish Ecological Network.
