The artwork "The Kidnapping of Europa" was installed on Congo Mountain in Vollezele in the summer of 2023. The artist, Koenraad Tinel, has lived in Vollezele for over 25 years and is an honorary citizen of Galmaarden. It is one of his largest artworks, 8 meters long and 9 meters tall. It weighs 2.5 tons and is made of bronze. It depicts Princess Europa sitting on a swimming bull. It is an artwork of hope. There are many different attractions around Gaverplas lake. People can be seen fishing on the lakeside banks. There is a big fountain, restaurants, bars and cafes. Many different paddle boats are at the main building section. Good new gravel tracks go around the lake. It is a popular area as the campsite is connected also and local people pass through

The Deux-Acren lock is the last one before the Dender River enters Flanders. After both Geraardsbergen and the upstream Walloon village of Deux-Acren were hit by a devastating flood in 2010 (which even claimed one life), plans were drawn up to carry out flood protection works on the Dender. Progress in Wallonia progressed faster than in Flanders: the dam works in Deux-Acren were completed in 2017.
