The NATO Satcom Site in Leerbeek, located on the Kesterheide heath, is one of the largest NATO communications centers in Europe. The base has undergone an upgrade over the past four years, with the familiar white sphere receiving three additional spheres and an upgrade itself. This upgrade was necessary to make the new NATO base one of the largest communications centers in Europe. The total cost of this upgrade was 15 million euros. Only four other locations in Europe still have such a base: in Italy, Turkey, and Greece. The base in Leerbeek and the one in Verona, Italy, are the largest, each with four spheres. The white spheres are actually inflatable Kevlar balloons that protect the satellites.

A very beautiful old market hall now serves as a museum. An old market, which had existed here since 1802, was adorned with an obelisk fountain taken from the Grimberg Abbey. It found its place in the center of the square, where it can still be found today, but inside the hall. In 1870, the area was redesigned, and in 1880, the hall opened in its current form. In 1973, a wholesale market was built on the site, and the building began to decline until it was declared a historic monument in 1987.
