The Duisburg Dolmen Stone is a large historical erratic boulder in Duisburg (a district of Tervuren). It is often associated with prehistoric rituals and may have been part of an ancient burial monument (dolmen), although this has not been proven with certainty. The stone is primarily considered a local archaeological and folklore monument, commemorating the very early settlement of the region.

Narrow path next to the Voer. It can get quite busy, with lots of walkers, joggers, and horseback riders.

In the former hamlet of Goordaal, a water mill, the Moelene van Gordale, was built around 1293. This was one of the twelve ducal ban mills on the Voer between Tervuren and Leuven. In the medieval legal system, wind and water belonged to the owner of the fief, in this case the Duke of Brabant. The surrounding farmers were therefore obliged to grind their grain here and leave some of it behind. The dilapidated wooden mill was rebuilt in 1534 in brick and natural stone with a tiled roof instead of straw. Clay for the bricks was collected in the surrounding area. The name Spaans huis refers to the elongated facade stones, Spanish stone. In the 17th century, Archdukes Albrecht and Isabella had a long wall built around the Warande. The walls of the Spaans huis were also rebuilt. The current appearance, albeit without a mill, dates from that time. The mill remained in operation until the second half of the 18th century. For the 1897 World Exhibition, Leopold II had the ponds enlarged and trees planted. The picturesque mill house inspired artists and writers, such as Eleanor Smith with her novel The Spanish House. The name Spaans Huis is much more recent than the name Gordaalmolen or Gordaelmolen, as this building was originally called (and is still called). Go(o)rdaal was a medieval hamlet that belonged to the lords of Rotselaar for a while (fifteenth century). It thus became a neighbour of Warande. De Warande is still a name given to the park of Tervuren. The so-called Spaans huis was originally a watermill in Goordaal, a marshy hamlet because the name comes from goor dal where goor means marshy and we all know a valley. According to the information board on the building (see photos), it was built in the seventeenth century and served as a ducal ban mill. In short: people had to have their grain ground there? What is Spanish about it? The period in which the brick from which it was built was often used. Today the Goordaalmolen is located at the Goordaalvijver: https://www.komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/1776479

12월 5, 2024, Dolmensteen van Duisburg (Zevenster, Zoniënwoud)
Regardless of how many paths, lanes, avenues, and other sunken roads converge here, this place is known as the Zevenster (Seven Star). And in the middle lie those famous stones. They too have a name: together, they form the Duisburg Dolmen Stone. Specifically, it refers to three remaining fragments of this Dolmen Stone, which originally, in their unbroken state, had a diameter of approximately 2.45 meters. The stone (a chunk of quartzite, or compressed sandstone) was unearthed in 1883 in a field near Duisburg. Locals initially thought it was an impacted meteorite, which subsequently earned it the name "dry thunderstone." After considerable debate, it is now believed to be polishing stones. So, no remains of a megalithic monument, although several Stone Age artifacts have been found in the Sonian Forest. The stone was unbroken when it was found. This happened during its transport to the Warande Park or the Warande (Tervuren Park) here, where it was brought by horse and cart in 1897 and was a showpiece at the World's Fair—although the 267 Congolese who were forcibly brought to Belgium to be exhibited as animals in a zoo that same year likely attracted more attention. The Zevenster itself is, of course, a rather special spot with all its avenues and paths converging. You can enjoy it from various benches, including a picnic table and a "wooden throne." Incidentally, the Zevenster isn't that old. In the past, it was entirely laid out in a checkerboard pattern. The redevelopment of the Warande, with a star-shaped instead of checkerboard pattern, took place under Charles of Lorraine in the eighteenth century. Quote: "The Warande itself also received a thorough facelift, and the original checkerboard pattern was changed to a star-shaped layout, with the various avenues converging into the 'Zevenster'." In the park of Tervuren on the edge of the Sonian Forest there are several large ponds. Here in this park you will also find the Africa Museum. During the world exhibition of 1958 an African village was rebuilt here with real African inhabitants. When it turned out that these people were not resistant to the climate this "exhibition" was stopped.

The "Spanish House" is an old mill house in Tervuren Park, first mentioned in a document dating back to 1239. It once served as a ducal mill for the Dukes of Brabant in Tervuren and Duisburg. The Spanish House now houses a bistro and an information center. It provides employment for people who cannot find (suitable) employment in the regular labor market. Here, they receive training to help them gain a foothold in the regular job market. https://www.hetspaanshuis.com/index.html
