This is the Baroque so-called Rega Wing, dating from 1723, of the University Hall. Until 1914 (and its subsequent destruction), the university library was also located here. Anyone who wants to enter the University Hall itself will likely know that the entrance to this former cloth hall is on the other side (Naamsestraat). Since you're here, you might want to take a closer look at this Rega Wing—and note the list of names of "victims of the old market" on the 1924 memorial on the facade. Where parties and drinking have been going on for decades, in 1914 it was nothing but destruction and devastation. Cheers!

This monumental pulpit was made for the abbey church (Norbertines) of Ninove and consists of a rock and two palm trees. At the bottom, the conversion of Norbert is depicted, and Peter in a cave. A devotional chapel belonging to the St. Michael parish, built between 1641 and 1705 on the current corner of Frederik Lintsstraat, on the site of two older chapels. In 1798, the French sold it publicly to chapel master J. Van Hamme and, from 1814 onward, it served as a parish church. When the Friars Minor purchased the church in 1865, they had a walled monastery built adjacent to it, with a spacious garden on the eastern side featuring vegetable plots, dwarf fruit trees, and greenhouses. The chapel was first restored in 1878 under the direction of architect P.P. Stoop, when the stained-glass windows, designed by P. Vander Auderaa and crafted in the workshop of Stalins and Janssens, were also installed. In 1889, the church was given a new choir. During a second restoration in 1907, the facade was stripped of plaster. In 1986, the Catholic University of Leuven purchased the church and the former monastery, which, after renovations, were repurposed as the Catholic Documentation and Research Centre. The small beguinage, also known as the beguinage of St. Catherine or St. Gertrude, was founded in the second half of the 13th century. In 1269, there is a mention of Bertula, "beghina de sancta Gertrude de Lovanio," who donated a tax to the St. Gertrude priory. In 1275, an infirmary was mentioned, perhaps the core from which the small beguinage was formed. The small beguinage may have had its own chapel from 1295 onward, served by the pastor of the St. Gertrude parish to which the beguinage belonged. Saint Gertrude's Church, built around 1220, was originally an abbey church with a community of canons regular. The prosperous abbey, with its extensive estates, farms, and vineyards, also wielded considerable political power. Its prelate sat on the States of Brabant, the governing body that represented the interests of the clergy. Architecturally, the church belongs to the Gothic style. The spire, designed around 1453 by the architect Jan van Ruysbroeck, is unique: carved entirely from stone, without wood or nails. It is considered one of the seven wonders of Leuven.
