The Grote Nete, roughly speaking, marks the transition to the Kempen region. This rain-fed river flows through a diverse landscape with vast marshlands, sandy grasslands, and mixed forests. The Grote Nete valley includes the Grote Laak, Kleine Laak, Rode Laak, Wimp, Herselt Loop, and Zaartloop. Over the years, the castle was modernized and updated. This included the tower, whose heavy line of the fortified wall was broken by irregular window and door arrangements. The castle still houses remarkable works of art. The neo-Gothic armory houses a cast-iron stove from 1539 and two marble Renaissance mantelpieces. The castle has been the pride of Vorselaar for centuries. Around 1270, the first stone was laid by the knights of Rotselaar. The ground plan has been largely preserved to this day. The castle houses a treasure trove of history and stories, and has been inhabited by noble families all this time.

The Grote Nete rises northeast of Hechtel, about 1.5 km from the Dommel (which belongs to the Meuse catchment area). From Lier it flows together with the Kleine Nete and forms the Nete or the Beneden Nete. The Grote Nete lies further south than the Kleine Nete and flows through the municipalities of Meerhout, Balen, Geel-Oosterlo, along Laakdal, Westerlo, Herselt, Westmeerbeek, Hulshout, Booischot, Heist-op-den-Berg, Hallaar, Itegem, Herenthout, Berlaar, Bevel, Kessel and Lier. At the confluence with the Kleine Nete, the Grote Nete paradoxically has a smaller discharge than the Kleine Nete. Source: Wikipedia
