The small town of Banneux in Belgium, to which this shrine refers, has the same spiritual significance for pilgrims as Fatima in Portugal or Lourdes in the French Pyrenees. These are places where the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, appeared to people (often children) and gave them a message to pass on. The quarry (also known as "Rotsch") was formerly a site for the extraction of limestone and dolomite, which was crucial for the local construction and economic structure. Today, the quarry has been located and forms an impressive, near-natural lake that provides a picturesque backdrop – deep cliffs and steep walls characterize the landscape.

The Banneux Chapel, also known as the Chapelle de Banneux, is a small, simple chapel in the hamlet of Langmüs, south of the village center of Walhorn. It was built in commemoration of the 1933 Marian apparitions in the Belgian pilgrimage site of Banneux, during which the Virgin Mary appeared to the young Mariette Beco and revealed herself as the "Virgin of the Poor."
