Saint Evermarus is venerated in three places in Europe: in Borth, in Burtscheid near Aachen, and in Rutten, a small municipality belonging to Tongeren in Belgium. According to legend, Evermarus and his seven companions were slain here by the robber chief Hacco. This is said to have happened around the year 700, and his remains were discovered around 960. A small chapel was built on the site. Every year on May 1st, the patron saint's festival of Saint Evermarus is celebrated in Rutten. After a procession through the town, the so-called Martyrs' Play takes place, during which local actors reenact the story of the saint's life and death.

It is a cult building dating back to 1784, but its legendary origins date back to 968. For centuries, it has been a center of popular worship.

Beautifully situated in a fairly busy bend but a stone's throw from the footpaths with just behind it the access drive to the castle of Hamal (with Christ's Cross). The detour is more than worth it. In 1894 the tram line Tongeren-Fexhe-Le-Haut-Clocher was constructed. The line was partly created to facilitate the transport of beets. A special depot was even provided for this purpose in the station of Rutten. On the orders of senator Count Arthur de Grunne a tram house was also built in Hamal in 1897, at the entrance to the Kasteeldreef. It served as a residence and guard house at the tram stop. Passenger transport on the line was discontinued in 1940, freight transport continued until 1955. The stations of Rutten and Hamal became residential homes, the railway line was preserved, in the form of a field path. Four bays and two storeys, built in brick on a cemented plinth. On the right a lower extension under a saddle roof. Wide house, centrally intersected by a deep house, each under saddle roofs in a geometric combination of red and black tiles. Due to this structure, the two wide facades have a central risalit in the form of a gable. Rectangular wall openings with limestone drip sills and lintels, set in niche-shaped, brick frames with round and basket-shaped relieving arches in a combination of dark and light brick. The windows in the left gable (Rutten side), as well as in the risalit of the front facade (Hamal side) are set over two levels in a single, continuous niche. Because the central ground-floor bay of the front facade consists of a coupled window, the niche narrows towards the top; the transition is accommodated by limestone consoles. Only the front facade still has a door, in the far left bay; the rear (former platform?) has two bricked-up, ground-floor wall openings, which probably also served as doors in the past. The facings are finished with bacon layers and arched friezes in lighter-coloured brick. Cornices have been partly replaced by simple wooden ones, but the gables and the central gable at the fronts still bear picturesque lead ones with metope division and floral motif. The transverse saddle roof still has a ridge crest. Inventory of Immovable Heritage: NMVB tram station, https://id.erfgoed.net/erfgoedobjecten/200364

The current neoclassical church replaces the Romanesque church with basilica elevation, demolished in 1851, from the 11th or 12th century, of which the ground plan described a three-aisled nave with a semicircular choir and west tower; the latter was blind and had a very old substructure; the church was provided with a flat wooden ceiling; one of the side aisles was already demolished in 1684. The new church was built in 1852, 200 meters away from the old church, to a design by J. Dumont. The ground plan describes a three-aisled nave of four bays, a projecting west tower, a choir of a straight bay with three-sided closure, flanked on either side by sacristies. Sober, brick building under a saddle roof (slate), with the use of bluestone for the plinth, drip mouldings and frames of the wall openings. The tower has a round arch portal in the west facade, above which is a small round arch window and an oculus with a clock; a round arch sound hole in each side; constricted spire. The nave has round arch windows, the hard stone arch mouldings interconnected. Plastered interior, the central nave separated from the side aisles by a round arch arcade on columns. Barrel vault above the nave, flat ceiling above the side aisles; half dome above the choir. Furniture: Statue of Saint Servatius, polychromed wood (early 17th century); statue of Christ on the cross, polychromed wood (mid 19th century); statue of Saint Sebastian, polychromed wood, folk art (first half of the 19th century); processional Madonna, dressed (early 17th century). Main altar, painted wood, baroque (early 18th century) with painting, depicting the Ascension, signed and dated L. Hendrix (Peer), 1859; side altars (mid 19th century).
