Very nice piece of single track that runs just next to the Trakelweg (canal towpath) just next to the Mandel. The small but beautiful Mandelhoek Nature Reserve certainly has its charms. Many years ago the Mandel was very polluted but nowadays it has become very clear water. Thanks to good nature management the entire area has become beautiful.

The Flanders Field American Cemetery is the only American cemetery from the First World War in Belgium. In total, 368 soldiers have their final resting place in Waregem, neatly divided over 4 times 92 graves in white marble. Another 43 are listed on the Wall of the Missing. On the left past the entrance you will come across the Visitor's Room. In this former caretaker's house you can learn more about the American involvement during WWI in Belgium, the origins of the cemetery and personal stories of the fallen soldiers. On 26 March 2014, Barack Obama - then president of the USA - visited the American cemetery.

Every year, on the Sunday closest to May 30, Memorial Day is held at the cemetery for the American fallen. On this day of remembrance, speeches are given by religious figures, local politicians, American officers, representatives of the American embassy and veterans' organizations. Usually, during this ceremony, several American fighter planes fly over the cemetery as a tribute to their fallen compatriots. The ceremony is also enhanced by the singing of the American national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, by Waregem schoolchildren. The 37th division A.E.F. advanced from Olsene via Kruishoutem to Heurne and Eine. They crossed the Scheldt there. As a memento of this, the Ohio bridge at Eine near Oudenaarde was later built and paid for by the American state of Ohio. The 91st division A.E.F. advanced from Waregem through the Spitaalsbossen to Wortegem and then to Moregem. On 1 November 1918, they reached Oudenaarde. In the Spitaalsbossen, where the Germans had set up several machine gun posts, there was heavy fighting. The 91st division lost 49 officers and 920 men in these military operations. The cemetery grounds, which were part of the battlefield, were made available free of charge and tax-free by the Belgian government. Charles Lindbergh flew over the Flanders Field American Cemetery and Memorial on 30 May 1927. The cemetery was not officially inaugurated until 8 August 1937. In the 1930s, many mothers came to visit the graves of their fallen sons, via the Gold Star Mothers' Pilgrimage. Today, relatives still come to visit their family's graves. The cemetery was protected as a monument in 2009[1] US President Barack Obama, who visited Belgium for the first time on 26 March 2014, visited the cemetery together with then Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo and King Filip of Belgium.

The Flanders Field American Cemetery and Memorial is an American military cemetery in the Belgian city of Waregem, located at the intersection of the Wortegemseweg and the Bosstraat, near the exit of the E17 motorway. It is the only American cemetery in Belgium with soldiers who died in the First World War. It is located near the Spitaalsbossen, the place where most American soldiers died during the Battle of the Scheldt around 1 November 1918. Soldiers who were initially buried elsewhere were ceremonially reburied at the Flanders Field American Cemetery in the years after the Armistice. The architect of the cemetery is Paul P. Cret from Philadelphia, in the American state of Pennsylvania. he Flanders Field American Cemetery and Memorial is 2.4 hectares in size and consists of a central diamond in which the memorial chapel is central. On each side of the central square are four identical sections with 92 graves each. Of the total of 368 gravestones, 360 graves have Latin crosses and 8 gravestones have a Star of David (in each section the 2 rear ones). 21 of the 368 graves contain bodies that could not be identified. The chapel contains the names of the 43 American soldiers who have no known grave. On the four extensions of the diagonals are circular recesses, each containing an urn. The decorated urns are engraved with the insignia of the four American divisions that fought in Belgium: 27th div A.E.F., 30th div A.E.F., 37th div A.E.F. and 91st div A.E.F.
