There was already a lordship of IJse. The lords belonged to the Isque family and were vassals of the Duke of Brabant. However, this family died out in the male line, and the last heiress, Maria d'Oisy, sold the lordship in 1335 to Johan I van Wittem of the van Wittem family. From 1410 to 1456, Hendrik II van Wittem lived, who married Jacoba van Glymes. Their son was Hendrik III van Wittem (1440-1515) (also Van Wittem van Beersel or Van Witthem van Beersel). He built the castle after the village of Overijse was burned down in 1489 by the troops of Maximilian of Austria. He married Elisabeth van der Spout. Their son and successor was Filips van Wittem van Beersel (1471-1523). She married Johanna van Halewijn and their son Hendrik IV van Wittem (1495-1554) became lord of Beersel, while their son Georges van Wittem (1500-1544) became lord of IJse.

At De Doode Bemde, you can walk along the naturally meandering Dijle River. Near Leuven, nature conservation and flood protection go hand in hand. You might even spot beaver tracks. The hiking trails take you through more than 250 hectares of nature reserve. It's a mosaic of small fields, poplar plantations and swamp forests, meadows and hay meadows, roughs and reed beds, ponds and ditches. De Doode Bemde is part of the Zuid-Dijleland hiking network, offering over 300 km of hiking opportunities. Besides the Doode Bemde, this network includes many other areas managed by the Agency for Nature and Forests that can be combined with a walk in the Doode Bemde, such as the Egenhovenbos (between junctions 61 and 62 on the 16 km route), Heverleebos-Meerdaalwoud, the Grootbroek (between junctions 105 and 229) and Rodebos en Laanvallei (near junction 255).

Huldenberg Castle is nestled between wooded hills and rolling meadows in the picturesque Dijle Valley. Although it is privately owned and not open to visitors, the stately building with its towers and surrounding park forms a beautiful backdrop along your route. Avoid in wet weather because it is very muddy. In very dry weather the single tracks are very bumpy. You can hate it and love it at the same time because it is very beautiful

The Leuven town hall is usually identified with the richly decorated late Gothic wing on the Grote Markt. However, this is part of a larger complex that covers the entire block between the Grote Markt, Naamsestraat, Muntstraat and Boekhandelstraat. The various parts of the complex are arranged around a courtyard, the Vrijthof. On the east side is the oldest part of the town hall complex: the rear house, built by Sulpitius van Vorst and Jan II Keldermans between 1439 and 1445. The famous wing on the Grote Markt is the front house, built from 1448 to 1469 under the direction of Matthijs de Layens. The attached conservation house on the Naamsestraat was built in 1461. The southern half of the complex consists of more recent additions. On the Naamsestraat extends the Deanery of the Cloth Weavers, built in 1680 after the university had completely occupied the old cloth hall. The wing on the Muntstraat dates from 1938. The police station on the Grote Markt and Boekhandelstraat was built as a corps de garde in 1821-1822.
