It is fed by the Limentra Inferiore stream, one of the tributaries of the Reno. Lake Pratignano is very scenically situated on a verdant plateau overlooking the Ospitale and Dardagna valleys. It is a very particular example of a peat bog, unique in all of northern Italy, as well as a direct testimony of the last ice age, dating back to almost 10,000 years ago. The area around the lake offers extremely suggestive landscapes. In spring and autumn it also hosts a large number of bird species that stop here to rest during their migrations. Here also grows Drosera Rotundifolia, a carnivorous plant that in summer attracts insects of all sizes to capture and trap them in its coils.

Scenic artificial lake (it is formed by a dam) which reveals itself among the trees in a surprising way as you proceed from Acquerino (Pistoia) to Castiglion de' Pepoli (Bologna). On nice days it shows an intense and bright blue color which contrasts with the dark green of the tall conifers by which it is surrounded. Its sandy shores offer the possibility of swimming on hot summer days
