The name Malmantile is a toponym which literally means "bad tablecloth". This name of contempt originates from a legend reported in the Golden Legend of Jacopo da Varagine: in the 4th century AD, the bishop of Milan and Saint Zanobi visited Florence, stopping in the small village of Malmantile, where a rude innkeeper gave them hospitality in an inn very dirty and poorly cared for. The bad reception led the two saints to cast a curse on the inn, which sank into a crevasse. According to legend, the bad innkeeper's inn was located on the very spot where the tabernacle stands today.

Carmignano wine can be considered the progenitor of the so-called Super Tuscan wines (great Tuscan wines obtained by adding international vines such as Cabernet or Merlot to Sangiovese). Already in the seventeenth century for its production it was customary to add Cabernet to the "Sangioveto", a vine imported from France by the Medici (and still today called in the area Francesca grape, that is coming from France).

Another way to get to Pinone. Very quiet road through little village,finishing with steep switchback ramp between trees, quite spectacular even if you wont see much of landscape, initially you are dealing with olive trees and cipressi but the last part is forestry. the fresh tarmac is the cherry on the cake. i wont do in winter going down.
