Don't be discouraged by the climb, it's not very long and the arrival is worth the journey.

An excellent rest stop where you can stay in the dormitory or stop for lunch. With a donation, you can get bread, cheese, and a tart, or whatever else they have on hand. Volunteers are definitely available on weekends. In winter, the winter shelter is open in case of emergency. There is no bathroom.

At this point there is a fork to take to the right towards the path that goes down to the black lake. Poles recommended.

Beautiful lake with annexed Apennine refuge

Small lake less than 100 m long surrounded by greenery. Possibility to walk along the perimeter, with picnic tables, ample parking, shelter in high season and drinking water point.

One of the best known and most visited lakes in the entire Emilian Apennines, the Scaffaiolo is even mentioned by Boccaccio in the treatise “De Montibus” of 1373. It is located in the municipality of Fanano, in the province of Modena, and is of extraordinary beauty: the mountain Cupolino and Corno alle Scale are not far away and on its banks stands the historic Duca degli Abruzzi refuge, inaugurated in 1878. Here you can breathe high mountain air.
