Lake Scaffaiolo is a picturesque high mountain lake, located at 1,785 meters above sea level at the foot of Monte Cupolino, between the provinces of Pistoia, Modena and Bologna. The lake area also marks the border between the Frignano Park and the Corno alle Scale Regional Park.

One of the best known and most visited lakes in the entire Emilian Apennines, the Scaffaiolo is even mentioned by Boccaccio in the treatise “De Montibus” of 1373. It is located in the municipality of Fanano, in the province of Modena, and is of extraordinary beauty: the mountain Cupolino and Corno alle Scale are not far away and on its banks stands the historic Duca degli Abruzzi refuge, inaugurated in 1878. Here you can breathe high mountain air.

Scaffaiolo Lake is located at 1775mt
It is not of glacial origin as one might think but is due to a sinking of the mountain over time. Sinking caused by erosion of snow, wind and rain. The lake does not have a spring but is fed by snow, rain and summer frost.
Around the lake is the Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge which houses shelter and food.
