One of the best known and most visited lakes in the entire Emilian Apennines, the Scaffaiolo is even mentioned by Boccaccio in the treatise “De Montibus” of 1373. It is located in the municipality of Fanano, in the province of Modena, and is of extraordinary beauty: the mountain Cupolino and Corno alle Scale are not far away and on its banks stands the historic Duca degli Abruzzi refuge, inaugurated in 1878. Here you can breathe high mountain air.

Scaffaiolo Lake is located at 1775mt
It is not of glacial origin as one might think but is due to a sinking of the mountain over time. Sinking caused by erosion of snow, wind and rain. The lake does not have a spring but is fed by snow, rain and summer frost.
Around the lake is the Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge which houses shelter and food.

If you come from Corno alle Scale, first try your hand at the easy climb of Monte Cupolino, and then reach the Scaffaiolo lake from up there, enjoying the beautiful views that the lake offers from above.

Scaffaiolo lake is a mountain lake located in the territory of the municipality of Fanano in the Province of Modena, in the upper Modena Apennines. Its name seems to derive from scaffa, a presumably Lombard term that seems to mean a depression in the ground.

This lake is located under the summit of Mount Cupolino (1853 m a.s.l.) and less than two hours' walk from Corno alle Scale (1,945 m a.s.l.). On its side is built the oldest alpine refuge in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, the Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge, inaugurated on June 30, 1878. Nearby, to the north west, is located in a valley, of glacial origin, a small stagnation of water, called Lago d'Acqua Marcia. From Lake Scaffaiolo passes the Sentiero Italia which runs along the entire Apennine ridge up to the Alps, here coinciding with the European Path E1.

There are no fish in the lake, but there are many tadpoles; there are no woods nearby, except for grassy pastures and large expanses of blueberries. Subject to sudden changes in climate, strong winds, often surrounded by fog, Scaffaiolo lake is completely covered by snow and ice in the winter months.

It's always worth it. The sunset adds something extra. You can't miss the polenta (you have to book to eat inside). Great place for summer tent.

Beautiful mountain lake. Lake Scaffaiolo is located at about 1785 meters, near the summit of Mount Cupolino, a peak that is part of the Corno alle Scale area (1945 m above sea level). Near the lake there is the Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge

Unlike other lakes in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, Lake Scaffaiolo is not a lake of glacial origin, but owes its origin to chemical and physical alterations, with consequent disintegration of the rock, and to the action of snow and winds. It seems to be fed by rainwater, melting snow and an aquifer located under Mount Cupolino (this fact explains the impermeability of the ground). The origin of its diet, considered mysterious and still debated in past centuries, has been the subject of study since 1700.
Nearby, to the northwest, there is a small pool of water called Lake Acqua Marcia in a valley of glacial origin.

Lake Scaffaiolo is a fascinating place, characterized by an aura of mystery and legend.

It's not a difficult route, but I recommend wearing suitable footwear and crampons if you decide to hike to the lake in winter. Some areas may be icy, so having them in your backpack is a plus.
Bivouacs are permitted from dusk to dawn (no camping).
