The Medici Chapels form part of a monumental complex developed over almost two centuries in close connection with the adjoining church of San Lorenzo, considered the "official" church of the Medici family who lived in the neighbouring palace on Via Larga.

The basilica was consecrated in 393 by Sant'Ambrogio, rebuilt in the 11th century in the Romanesque style and enlarged in 1418 by Filippo Brunelleschi on behalf of Giovanni de' Medici. The church today represents one of the greatest expressions of Renaissance architecture and art.

Piazza San Lorenzo is not the most famous square in Florence, but it is one of the most outstanding. It is home to some of the city's most important sights, including the Basilica of San Lorenzo and its Medici Chapels. Unlike Piazza del Duomo, it has a special charm with its more medieval style.

A Renaissance palace located in the Oltrarno district, in the center of Florence and former residence of the banker Luca Pitti, Palazzo Pitti was for decades the main residence of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. Today it houses important museums with works by artists such as Titian and Raphael.
