The memorial found here pays tribute to an Italian cyclist who died at a relatively young age - in a traffic accident, during a training ride of all things: Michele SCARPONI's (1979 to 2017) greatest sporting success was becoming the overall winner of the 2011 Giro d'Italia.

After a short climb from Castelnuovo de' Monti, a suggestive view of the Pietra di Bismantova suddenly opens up

Challenging climb at times. Upon arrival, there is the possibility of refilling water at the fountain, or having a coffee and croissant at the Castello bar!

The Anfiteatro Romano di Luni is an important historical monument located in the archaeological zone of the National Archaeological Museum of Luni. It was built in the 2nd century AD, possibly during the Antonine period. The amphitheater was originally located on the coast, but the floods of the Magra River have changed the landscape and it is now about 2 kilometers from the sea. The amphitheater has an elliptical shape, with a major axis of 88.5 meters and a minor axis of 70.2 meters. It could accommodate up to 7,000 spectators and was mainly intended for animal and gladiator shows. The entire structure is made of cement conglomerate. However, some elements, such as the arches of the stairs and the main entrances, were clad in stone. Only the supporting elements of the stands have been preserved. These consist of two concentric rings of vaulted chambers.

Not demanding climb, beautiful panorama. The last stretch that leads under the castle from behind has a notable slope and a slippery pavement surface.

Along the climb you can see the Belvedere and further up there is the Cavazzone vinegar factory/restaurant with a magnificent view...highly recommended!! I got married there!
