The Anfiteatro Romano di Luni is an important historical monument located in the archaeological zone of the National Archaeological Museum of Luni.
It was built in the 2nd century AD, possibly during the Antonine period.
The amphitheater was originally located on the coast, but the floods of the Magra River have changed the landscape and it is now about 2 kilometers from the sea.
The amphitheater has an elliptical shape, with a major axis of 88.5 meters and a minor axis of 70.2 meters.
It could accommodate up to 7,000 spectators and was mainly intended for animal and gladiator shows.
The entire structure is made of cement conglomerate. However, some elements, such as the arches of the stairs and the main entrances, were clad in stone.
Only the supporting elements of the stands have been preserved. These consist of two concentric rings of vaulted chambers.
