Along the Via Sacra that leads to the Basilica, continuing north, you'll find the archaeological area of the ancient Roman river port of Aquileia. Unfortunately, cycling is prohibited (but pushing a bike is permitted), but I highly recommend this short detour to visit one of the most impressive and well-preserved archaeological areas of Roman Aquileia.

The oldest part of this Basilica dates back to 340 AD and therefore makes it one of the first early Christian basilicas in the world. What we see today is the eighteenth-century structure that has come down to us.

What remains of the old train station of Aquileia. From here in 1921, from the third platform of the station, the remains of the Unknown Soldier left and, after having traveled all over the Peninsula, were transferred to the Altar of the Fatherland in Rome. Today the old structure is undergoing renovation to make it available to the community again
