The cathedral dates from the 12th century, but its bell tower with machicolations, a defensive tower of the old castle, is older. The cathedral was renovated in the 15th century and has a Pisan-Romanesque facade with some ceramic bowls (13th century); the three portals are 15th century.

Nice place. Visit in spring or early summer. In full summer possibly no water

Unfortunately, we came across a prohibition sign halfway through, so we chose a different route, but unfortunately it did not reach Pozzo sfondato. Then we finally walked back and via the village on the other side we finally got there. Which was definitely worth it.

The church, which became a cathedral in 1622 when San Miniato was elevated to a diocesan seat, is located in the square known as Prato del Duomo, the area of the ancient citadel, which is dominated by the fortress and tower of Federico II. It is the oldest nucleus of the city, which brings together the Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace and the Palace of the Imperial Vicars. Wikipedia source

The history of the tower of Frederick II begins in the Middle Ages. The town of San Miniato is strategically located on a hill overlooking the surrounding valley. It is about equidistant from the major city centers of Florence, Pisa, Volterra, San Gimignano, Siena, which is no accident but chosen by the German Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire as the center of power and control over all of Tuscany. Emperor Otto I, left an impressive defense system and equipped the village of San Miniato with imposing walls. About 200 years later, Emperor Friedrich II had this tower built on the highest peak in the city, which still dominates the city today. On the night of July 23, 1944, the tower was blown up by German troops. What an outrage! In 1958 it was rebuilt. Unfortunately, when I visited in November, the tower was closed for climbing.
