A wonderful ascent! The narrow, well-paved road winds its way ever up the mountain. From S. Leonhard to Platt, there's hardly any traffic due to the narrow road. Much of the route is shaded.

A great road bike highlight even in the fog, as there is little/no traffic and good asphalt.

Attention, whoever starts here on the way towards S. Georgen has to climb down a natural stone staircase with 54 steps up to 35 cm high.

The Rametz Castle winery in Merano is one of the most traditional wineries in South Tyrol. Grapes have been cultivated here since 1227, and Pinot Noir has been cultivated since 1860 – the first Pinot Noir vines in all of South Tyrol. The special climate in Merano and the permeable soils of the moraine hill on which the castle stands provide ideal conditions for cultivation. Today, 10 hectares of vineyards surrounding the castle are planted with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are predominantly supported by Guyot trellises, using only weather-resistant chestnut posts instead of the concrete posts commonly used today. The cellars of Rametz Castle are also particularly noteworthy. The large cellar dates back to the 18th century and is built entirely of stone blocks, where the large oak barrels are stored. In the small cellar dating back to the 12th century, the precious barrique wines are aged in small oak barrels. Rametz Castle also houses a collection of historical winemaking tools and equipment, reflecting the winery's long tradition in a museum-like setting. Even if the brisk ride on the cycle path along the Etsch is tempting, a detour or even an overnight stay in Merano is highly recommended!
