The Protestant Church of St. John in Schaprode is one of the oldest churches on the island of Rügen. The brick building can be visited ("Tritt ein" - open churches) and is surrounded by a churchyard with green lawns. Events are regularly held here, mostly concerts, but sometimes a film screening. Pastor Holz opens the church for me again when I arrive, and he was already about to leave for the day. Very nice!

Delicious fish dishes and homemade ice cream, popular with locals and tourists alike for over 60 years. How about a scoop to go? Or inside in the restaurant, or in the small beer garden when the weather's nice. Bikes must be parked outside, but that's really not a problem around here.

An outdoor self-service café. Absolutely peaceful location, nestled in a beautifully landscaped and spacious garden with views across meadows and water all the way to Stralsund. Homemade, truly delicious cakes and tarts. Open only during the summer months between May and October.

The view from the top of the fortified dike is far-reaching. You can cycle or hike for 2.8 kilometers - with the island of Hiddensee, just 4 kilometers away, always in view.

The Protestant St. Catherine's Church was built in 1318 and is one of the oldest religious buildings on the island. It is a so-called wayside church based on the Swedish model, which is open to visitors during the day between April and October. For such a small village, the building and tower are quite massive, or let's say imposing. In 1616, the tower was given the "Welsche Haube" (Italian hood), which still defines its striking appearance today and is noticeable even from afar. A particularly beautiful celebration took place in May 2016, when the original three-bell chime was restored after 99 years. Two new bells, made possible by generous donations from residents and the community, were ceremoniously presented and put into operation with a carriage ride through the districts. Since then, the midday bell has rung every day at 12 noon sharp.
