4월 4, 2024, Strada Nuova, Pavia
The Strada Nuova in Pavia is a historic street dating back to Roman times. The name “Strada Nuova” does not suggest it, but it is actually the oldest street in Pavia. The street is 1,195 meters long and runs from the Ponte Coperto to the Castello Visconteo. The Roman street plan is still clearly visible in present-day Pavia. The Strada Nuova is particularly lively and rich in shops and boutiques.

4월 4, 2024, Basilica di San Michele Maggiore
This masterpiece in Lombardy-Romanesque style was built in the 12th century on the remains of an older church, where the coronation of the Lombard kings took place. This tradition continued in the new building and it was here that Frederick Barbarossa was awarded the Iron Crown of the Kingdom of Italy in 1155. The importance of the building explains its façade** of light sandstone (and not the then usual brick), remarkably balanced and varied in its sculpted decoration. On the right is a Romanesque door. On the door lintel, Christ gives Paul a papyrus scroll and Peter the keys to the church.

4월 4, 2024, Duomo di Pavia
Construction of this gigantic cathedral, crowned with one of the largest domes in Italy, began in 1488. Bramante and Leonardo da Vinci are said to have worked on the design. Because of the complexity of the dome, it was not completed until 1887. The facade is 19th century.

4월 4, 2024, Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro
Inside, walled into the last pillar of the right aisle, is the tomb of the Lombard king Liutprand (744 m), whose bones were found in 1896. The church also houses the relics of St. Augustine, brought here from Sardinia by Liutprand. The saint's relics are kept in the famous Ark of Saint Augustine, whose marble mass is visible on the main altar. The Ark was made by Giovanni di Balduccio between 1362 and 1365 and is decorated with at least 150 statues and bas-reliefs. The church is also mentioned by Dante Alighieri, who in the tenth canto of Paradise, vv.127-129 (in the Divine Comedy), reports these verses: The body from which she was expelled lies / in Ciel d'Auro, and she came from martyrdom / and exile into this peace; it refers to the soul of Severinus Boethius, a Roman advisor to the Ostrogothic king Theodoric, who was executed by him on charges of treason. Boethius' body is also kept in the basilica, right in the crypt.

Consecrated in 1132, this church in Lombardy Romanesque style is the successor to an early Christian basilica and was famous in the Middle Ages. The beautiful brick facade** has a sandstone portal* decorated with a bas-relief. Also note the decoration with blind arches and majolica in the upper part.

4월 4, 2024, Visconti Castle of Pavia
This imposing brick castle was built between 1360 and 1365 by order of Galeazzo Visconti and served as a fortification and residence. The north wing of the castle was destroyed at the battle of Pavia (1525) between the French and the Spanish. Petrarch loved the building and assembled a rich library there, which later moved to France. The large courtyard has arcades and an ornate loggia with twin windows.

4월 4, 2024, Ponte Coperto (Covered Bridge) of Pavia
According to legend, some pilgrims wanted to attend midnight mass in the city on Christmas Eve in 999, but due to the thick fog their boats could not cross the river. Suddenly, a man dressed in red arrived and promised that he would immediately build a bridge in exchange for the first soul to cross the bridge. The man in red was the devil, and only the Archangel Michael, who had come from the nearby church, recognized him. Michael pretended to agree to the deal, but once the bridge was built, a goat crossed it first. The bridge is therefore also known as the Ponte del Diavolo ("Devil's Bridge").

4월 4, 2024, Ponte Coperto (Covered Bridge) of Pavia
The covered bridge has its origins in Roman times. The current one was constructed in the 14th century and covered in 1583. Upstream of the bridge you can still see pillars of the original bridge, reconstructed after the Second World War. A memorial stone on the bridge tells that Albert Einstein stayed in Pavia for several months and loved the place.

4월 4, 2024, View of Ponte Coperto
Rebuilt in the mid-fourteenth century to replace the old Roman bridge (whose pillars can still be seen), it connects the historic center of the city with the picturesque medieval village beyond the Ticino, a traditional town of washerwomen, gravel diggers and fishermen. Its feature, which makes it the evocative symbol of Pavia, is its roofing, commissioned by Galeazzo II Visconti in the aftermath of the conquest of the city, and the presence of an eighteenth-century chapel, dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk. Bombed in World War II, the bridge was rebuilt in the early 1950s.
