Go even in winter... even though the refuge is closed, the snow-covered valley is a natural spectacle. Crampons are a must, but it's also possible with just poles, taking care on icy sections.

It's an old mountain hut renovated by the Bormio section of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) to serve as a shelter for mountaineers, ski mountaineers, and hikers. The refuge, dedicated to Federico Valgoi, a young mountaineer from Bormio who lost his life while climbing in 2002, is the catalyst for the revival of mountaineering in the Val Viola and Val Dosdè.

Bormio 2000 is undergoing major renovations for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

You eat really well at low prices

The Alpe pass, at 2,461 meters, is one of the most suggestive in the area. The climb, long but accessible, crosses the Val di Rezzalo on a paved road that then becomes a dirt road and steeper. The descent towards the Gavia pass road offers almost 200 meters of altitude difference.

Cofermo is without a doubt the refuge with the lowest prices in the area and maintains an exquisite home cooking. The staff is always courteous and kind.

Lajtowy route for intermediate users. Awesome views. A trip worth committing to, if only because the eternal glacier disappears before your eyes 🫣. I recommend it.
