In this vital hub of passages and trade, the Gonzaga family exercised their control, while Dante, with his immortal pen, fixed Governolo in the collective memory in the XX canto of the Inferno.

The Matildica tower of Governolo, located in the area once known as Matildica Island, is what remains of a 14th century trapezoidal castle, demolished on the orders of Emperor Charles VI. This historic tower, together with a 17th-century crenellated house, has hosted popes and emperors and witnessed numerous battles.
