This massive drainage system, located in the San Matteo delle Chiaviche hamlet of the municipality of Viadana, provides drainage for a hydraulic basin of approximately 32,000 hectares. It pumps the tributary waters through the Navarolo, Ceriana and Fossola canals into the Oglio river, with a total flow rate of approximately 53,000 liters per second. The plant, in addition to its hydraulic functions, is now home to the interpretation and documentation center of the ecomuseum of Viadana, Commessaggio, Dosolo and Gazzuolo.

The history of Rivarolo Mantovano is strongly characterized by the domination of the Gonzaga family, of which there are important and numerous traces throughout the municipal territory. Historical research informs us that the first urban nucleus of Rivarolo was located about a kilometer away from the current position, as evidence of the ancient settlement there are still the remains of the terraqueous mill, located on the bank of the Delmona canal, and a tombstone, from the Lombard era, kept in the current parish church and coming from the ancient parish church. In 1432 the emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg officially sanctioned the Gonzaga lordship on the Rivarolo territory, which would continue for more than three centuries, leaving a precious baggage of history, monuments and traditions.

In this area you can see various hydraulic engineering mechanisms, placed in correspondence with the watercourse: they are of fundamental importance for regulating the flow and preventing possible floods. The Fossola Canal, in the Municipality of Viadana, is in fact characterized by artificial conditions which can cause safety problems due to bed and bank erosion.

It is essential to check that the bridge is open. Check the official website of the Greenway del fiume Oglio and the Facebook page for closure announcements (https://www.facebook.com/cicloviaoglio ). The detour can add a considerable amount of kilometers: cross the bridge at San Matteo delle Chiaviche and go around Campitello, Canicossa and Cesole to get back on the EuroVelo 8 to Romanore.

Very impressive, however, I found it closed and forced me to take a detour of about 20km more ... not really comfortable. If bridge closures are frequent, I recommend that you inquire before getting there

Sabbioneta needs no introduction, already a UNESCO heritage site since 2008. A relatively recent village, it was founded around 1555 at the behest of Vespasiano Gonzaga, with administrative autonomy. It was initially a "small state" located between the Duchy of Milan (then under Spanish domination) and the Gonzaga Duchy of Mantua. Rich in monuments as per the link: https://www.turismosabbioneta.org/it/

A splendid town in the province of Mantua on the border with Cremona. The entire village is strongly influenced, as are many other places in the province, by the presence of the Gonzaga family. The old historic center within the walls has an architecture with long, straight streets overlooked by old rural houses, with Piazza Finzi, which represents the cultural and other center of the town.

The "Corridor grande in the castle square" was built between 1584 and 1586. The frescoed decoration of the walls was made in 1587 by Giovanni and Alessandro Alberti. The gallery, although the name may suggest a connection between two buildings, never had this function. The gallery, on the other hand, was built to contain a collection of ancient marbles, the Duke's archaeological collection (consisting of busts, statues, epigraphs), which he purchased after his return from the royal court of Spain in 1578. The collection of ancient marbles and trophies in 1773, by Austrian decree, was transferred to the Palazzo dell’Accademia in Mantua. In 1774 all the movable objects present in the ducal palaces of Sabbioneta were confiscated and above all the ancient marbles. In 1915 the Virgilian Academy ceded the property to the Municipality of Mantua, which deposited the objects in the Ducal Palace. Today the marbles, recently restored, are exhibited in the gallery of the exhibition inside the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua. (source https://www.turismosabbioneta.org/it/)

Sabbioneta is the fascinating practical representation of a philosophical ambition: the city was built at the behest of Duke Vespasiano Gonzaga with the aim of realizing the Renaissance concept of the Ideal City in which art, architecture and urban planning represent the highest expression of classicism. The sixteenth-century theories that guided its design make Sabbioneta a village of incredible architectural and artistic value: in its streets, in its views and in its buildings you can recognize the perspective theories and the theories of proportions that give the town harmony and elegance . Since 2008, Sabbioneta has been included among the Unesco sites, therefore a place declared "of exceptional universal value", a World Heritage Site, and welcomes you to the city wanted by Vespasiano, a treasure trove of art and architecture. We invite you to explore all the beauty of the Ideal City. From the Mantua-Sabbioneta Unesco site: “Mantua and Sabbioneta offer an exceptional testimony of urban, architectural and artistic realization of the Renaissance, linked together through the ideas and ambitions of the ruling family, the Gonzagas. They represent the most eminent examples of the two most emblematic modes of urban planning of the Renaissance, respectively the evolutionary and the foundational one. As such, they served as a reference for most of the subsequent city building experiences up to the modern era. The artists who contributed to the creation of the two cities produced masterpieces that brought to fruition the ideals of the early Renaissance, making a decisive contribution to the international spread of a movement destined to influence and shape the whole of Europe ".
