The 🟣 PURPLE PATH 🟣 is a sculpture trail connecting Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture 2025, with 38 towns and municipalities in the region. Wherever these stripes are, Buren is there too. Since 2013, the colors aquamarine, strawberry red, yellow-green, sky blue, melon yellow, signal violet, and traffic yellow, arranged vertically in monochrome rings from bottom to top, have made the nearly 302-meter-high chimney of the now-decommissioned North Combined Heat and Power Plant (Eins Energie in Sachsen) in Chemnitz visible from afar, both during the day and, thanks to an LED illumination system added in 2017, at night. Buren placed his famous vertical stripes around the platforms of the surrounding maintenance balconies, which also separate the seven color rings for a chimney, almost as a self-referential nod. The unique aesthetic of the industrial city of Chemnitz inspired many artists, such as the Expressionists Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, who grew up there. Buren's work makes it clear from almost every point in the city that Chemnitz is a city of art.
