It is worth mentioning here that the best-preserved Roman amphitheater, surpassing even the Flavian Roman amphitheater in this respect, is the amphitheater located in eastern Tunisia, in El Jem. It is the most spectacular Roman building in North Africa.

The amphitheater bears witness to the importance that Lecce reached in Roman times. Although there is no certainty about the dating of this work, the most accredited theses attribute it to the will of the emperor Augustus (1st and 2nd century after Christ). Over the centuries the different dominations and natural events have drastically changed the appearance of this part of the city until the Roman structure has completely disappeared. It was only during the construction of the Banca d'Italia headquarters, which took place in the early years of the 20th century, that the first remains of this work came to light. The part visible today is only a third of the original structure, which could accommodate up to 25,000 people, the rest is still buried under the pavement of Piazza Sant'Oronzo.

The castle of Lecce, also known as the Castle of Charles V, is a fortress located in the historic center of the city built in the 12th century as the residence of the counts of Lecce. In the 16th century, the emperor Charles V ordered a restructuring of the castle to adapt it to the new defensive and symbolic needs. The castle thus assumed its current form, with four corner bastions and a wall that incorporated the previous medieval structure.

A first cathedral of the Diocese of Lecce was built in 1144 by Bishop Formoso Lubelli; In 1230 the cathedral was renovated and rebuilt in Romanesque style at the behest of Bishop Roberto Voltorico. In 1659 the Bishop of Lecce Luigi Pappacoda commissioned the Lecce architect Giuseppe Zimbalo, known as the Zingarello, to rebuild the cathedral church in the Lecce Baroque style. . The architect decided not to change the plan of the Romanesque cathedral and the cornerstone was laid on January 1 of the same year. Construction lasted from 1659 to 1670 when the new cathedral was solemnly consecrated by Bishop Pappacoda. Source: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duomo_di_Lecce

It's one of the most important square of the old town. A series of monuments are included, such as: the Cathedral of Maria Ss.Assunta, the palaces of the Bishopric and the Seminary, the bell tower. Due to the unusual sider position of the original main gate of the Cathedral and in relation of the only entrance to the square, the left side of the building was artistically developed, transforming it into the main view that today welcomes visitors. The original construction of the Cathedral dates back to 1144, then in 1230, some renovations followed, but in 1659-70 it was totally restored by the wishes of Bishop Pappacoda, who commissioned it to the mayor artist Guseppe Zimbalo, that in those years was also involved in doing the adjacent bell tower. The façade he created, therefore, is the first that is presented to visitors, and is artisticallyconsidered the most important due to its sumptuous decorations of seventeenth century.
