In the middle of downtown Acqui Terme, Piazza Bollente is probably the main attraction of the beautiful city. Here stands the small Greek fountain temple, Fontana della Bollente, built in 1879, from which 74.5 degree hot, sulphurous water gushes. The cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is located in Piazza Duomo, in the historic center of Acqui Terme. The façade is preceded by the neoclassical pronaos with paired sandstone columns, built at the beginning of the 17th century. It opens onto the square with three Serliana round arches supported by Tuscan marble columns. Above the prothyrum, the large circular rose window opens up. To the right of the facade, leaning against it, there is the 15th century Gothic bell tower, with five orders separated by simple cornices and a spire with an octagonal base. In the rear part of the church, there are the five Romanesque apses, of which the three central ones of the original church, characterized by single-lancet windows with arch decoration. The same decoration adorns the external walls of the naves and the transept. On the cross, the octagonal lantern rises with a Renaissance-style lantern which replaced a higher previous lantern in the sixteenth century.
