The Ter Apeler Sluis and cable car have an interesting history, especially in relation to the construction of the Ruiten Aa Canal and the subsequent development of Ter Apel. The lock, which was built in 1917, is an essential part of the canal and is managed by the Hunze en Aa's water board. The cable car, which is located on the Ruiten Aa Canal, is unique and serves as a connecting link in hiking trails and as a tourist attraction.

It was really good here. The spot on the terrace is beautiful under old trees with a view of the old monastery. We slept well, ate well, and had a great breakfast with provisions that were offered at breakfast. The staff is very friendly. We felt completely at home.

In the quiet border village of Barnflair lie the weathered remains of the Redoute de Batterij, a field fortification from 1798 that was once part of a chain of defenses between Coevorden and Nieuweschans. The redoubt lies on a sandy elevation between former peatlands, where the landscape still exudes an open, historical character.

Beautiful restaurant. I had a cappuccino with coconut milk and it was delicious! Very nice that they offer a substitute for cow's milk.
