The Tower of San Giovanni is the only military testimony of the Middle Ages and has been the inspiration for many legends that have survived to this day. It is said that the tower was built as a prison for exiles. According to legend, the tower also served as a prison for Agrippina Postumio, third son of Agrippa and Giulia, daughter of Ottaviano and the famous philosopher Seneca. Another legend tells that the queen of the island of Elba was imprisoned there for life because she fell in love with a Saracen. No matter what you believe, the view from here alone is worth a visit.

The oldest sanctuary on the island of Elba, in a small plain at the foot of Monte Capanne, is the hermitage of San Cerbone. The church is surrounded and sheltered by a magnificent forest of hundred-year-old chestnut trees, so embraced by nature that it cannot be seen from afar. According to tradition, it was the place where the bishop of Populonia took refuge in 569 when fleeing to Elba from the attacks of the barbarians and the Lombard warriors.

The watchtower of San Giovanni is located on the slope of Monte Perone at about 300 meters high and dates back to the 12th-13th centuries. Century back when the island of Elba was subject to the Republic of Pisa. At the time there was on one side the threat of the Saracens and on the other side the enmity between Pisa and Genoa, which soon turned into a war for dominance in the Mediterranean. For this reason the Pisans built an important system of fortifications to defend the whole island. The Tower of San Giovanni was built to guard the Gulf of Marina di Campo, a place then vulnerable to attacks from the sea. The tower was not only an observation tower, but also had a strategic position as a watchtower, for sea control, and for communication with optical signals; today you have a breathtaking panoramic view from here. The castle of Volterraio is perfectly built beneath the impassable rock and dominates the northern part of the island. The excellent position was absolutely suitable for repelling attacks or serving as a refuge. When you reach the summit, you immediately discover that time has also claimed its victims here, but the fascination of this fortification has remained absolutely intact: the wall ring, the stair access over the former drawbridge, the battlement with the watchtower, the square tower, rooms and vaults , the remains of an oven, wells and cisterns, warehouses and underground passages, battlements and embrasures.

Worth visiting is the Volterraio Castle which is located on the top of a rugged hill of 395 metres, belonging to the north-eastern hilly group of the island. The environment perfectly underlines why it was built up here: on three sides the castle overlooks precipitous rocky walls of red jasper, covered by very sparse vegetation, mostly thorny cushions of aspalatoid broom and a low garrigue of sea cistus. The views you can enjoy from here are extraordinary, especially on the northern coast of Elba with Portoferraio in the foreground. The sunsets are absolutely not to be missed. It can be reached via a marked path, which branches off from the provincial road between Rio nell'Elba and Magazzini, on the side overlooking the latter location. The route starts from about halfway up, near bunkers from the Second World War. The ascent is decidedly steep, difficult and, in summer, under a scorching sun. The structure is free, although not easy, to access, but it must be done with a certain respect for the walls, unfortunately in poor condition and awaiting restoration.
