Very nice view of the east of the island, but also beyond Portferraio and as often on the Monte Capanne.
The fortress is being renovated and the former entrance is now closed (as of summer 2015).
Also to master with smaller children from 5 years.

The entrance to the fortress interior is not easy to find. Through a hole in a wall, it goes into it.

The Volterraio Fortress is an imposing castle built on the island of Elba at 394 meters above sea level for sighting and defense purposes; it owes its name to the city of Volterra or to the Latin word vultur (vulture).
The place was chosen by the Etruscans to build the first lookout post
and, again in the Etruscan period, the hill was part of an intelligent and efficient system of fortified hill villages between which, it seems, people communicated by lighting fires. The structure took on its definitive appearance at the end of the 1200s when the Maritime Republic of Pisa decided to redevelop it. An impregnable fortress yesterday, a suggestive terrace overlooking Elba and the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago today.

The upper trail from the Cima del Monte parking lot is too slippery and steep even for experienced hikers. Even our dog almost slid down the slope. It's better to go down the road to the right and turn onto another path after about 50 meters.
