10월 14, 2025, View of Pan di Zucchero from the Descent
From the beautiful scenery of the coast around Iglesias, on the southwestern tip of Sardinia, a gigantic sugarloaf rises from the sea. Admiring this imposing rock at sunset, rising from the sea just a few meters from the coast, is truly awe-inspiring: the sunlight radiates all shades of yellow and orange off the limestone formation. The Sugarloaf is one of the island's most impressive and spectacular natural monuments and the symbol of the coast around Iglesias. It takes its name from its resemblance to the famous Sugarloaf in the Bay of Rio de Janeiro, which replaced its original Sardinian name, Concali su Terràinu, in the 18th century. It can be reached by dinghy or boat from the beautiful Masua Bay, a stretch of the coast around Iglesias located 2.5 km away.

10월 13, 2025, View of Buggerru and Coastline
A site of industrial archaeology right on a beautiful coastline. Buggerru was founded in 1864 as a mining village. Today it is a holiday resort with around 1,000 inhabitants, a fifth of what it had at the beginning of the 20th century. The present village, with the parish church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, consists of fan-shaped houses where the valley of Monte Caitas flows into the sea, a channel that gave its name to the Malfidano mine, the most important mine during the mining era from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It was active until 1979: in just over a century, Buggerru, already known for its silver in Roman times, produced more than 1 million tons of zinc and 200,000 tons of lead. Its modern small port lies beneath the exit of the Henry Tunnel, now an open-air museum, once a railway tunnel for the transport of extracted minerals.

10월 13, 2025, Lago Corsi
Lago Corsi is a large artificial basin created by the dam of the Rio Canonica in the municipality of Iglesias. The dam is known as the Punta Gennarta Dam after the mountain on which it stands (417 meters above sea level). The dam was built between March 1959 and May 1964 and tested on July 26, 1971. The structure encloses a lake with an area of approximately 76 hectares and a total volume of approximately 12.70 million cubic meters. Currently empty.

10월 12, 2025, Piazza Sella, Iglesias
Iglesiente, the region at the center of the Sardinian mining epic and of which it is the capital, derives its name. It has a population of 27,000 and is the episcopal see and heir to the ancient diocese of Sulcis. Iglesias means "churches" in Spanish. It is no coincidence that in a city with a glorious past, especially under Catalan-Aragonese rule (when it was a royal city), the celebrations surrounding the Good Friday customs stand out, recalling Spanish customs in form and color. The mystery processions on Holy Tuesday and Holy Friday are particularly impressive. Among the churches, the Cathedral of Santa Chiara (dating back to the 13th century), the churches of Madonna delle Grazie, Del Collegio, a Jesuit temple, and San Francesco, one of Sardinia's best-preserved and most important buildings in the Gothic-Catalan style, which houses an altarpiece dating back to 1560, are particularly worth seeing.

8월 23, 2025, Passo Genna Bogai (549 m)
At 549 meters above sea level, the Genna Bogai Pass is one of the most scenic passes in the area. Reaching the summit is easier and shorter from Iglesias (about 10 km and 380 m of elevation gain) than from Fluminimaggiore (about 12 km and 500 m of elevation gain), but it's a beautiful climb regardless of your starting point. The road has little traffic, but caution is required due to the numerous sharp bends behind which vehicles, as well as herds of sheep and cows roaming freely, can hide!

3월 2, 2025, Porto Flavia
After a year of study, he drew up a detailed plan for the construction of two superimposed tunnels, each 600 meters long, connected by nine huge vertical reservoirs for the processed ore. In the upper tunnel, an electric train was used to bring the load to the deposits: the ore was unloaded by gravity into hatches on the reservoirs. In the lower tunnel, a conveyor belt picked up the ore from the deposits and brought it to an extendable 16-meter-long conveyor belt, capable of fully loading a steamship moored at the foot of the cliff in about two days. The deposits, carved directly into the rock, could hold over 10,000 tons of ore

3월 2, 2025, Porto Flavia
Design of Porto Flavia The owner of the mine commissioned Italian engineer Cesare Vecelli to develop a solution to improve the loading time and cost of loading steamships. Vecelli studied the coasts of Masua and finally found the perfect spot in the high cliffs in front of the Pan di Zucchero. Here the sea was deep enough and well protected from wind and waves to allow safe mooring, while the ore could be loaded from the cliffs by gravity.

3월 2, 2025, Porto Flavia
Porto Flavia is a seaport in the municipality of Iglesias in southwestern Sardinia. It was built in 1923–24 and served as the centre of the mineral production of Masua on the west coast of Iglesiente in Sardinia. It is named after Flavia Vecelli, daughter of Cesare Vecelli, who constructed and designed the port. The characteristics of the port make it unique in the world, and at the time of its construction it was an outstanding feat of engineering. The importance of Porto Flavia declined in the 1960s following the decline of mining activities in Sulcis-Iglesiente, and it was closed when mineral production in Masua ceased in the 1990s. Today the facility is owned by IGEA SpA, a public company that takes care of the restoration and conservation of the old mining facilities. The Masua mines are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Parco Geominerario della Sardegna[3] and are among the recommended destinations for visits to mining and industrial archaeology in the region. Guided tours of the mine take place daily, led by former workers or mining technicians from the IGEA.

In the center of the square stands the monument to Quintino Sella, the famous statesman, one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. Under the statue you can see the stone that indicates the beginning of the first stage of the Santa Barbara Mining Trail.
