The Vajont Dam, located in the valley of the same name in the province of Belluno, is one of the highest dams in Italy, with a height of 262 meters. Built between 1956 and 1960 for the production of hydroelectric energy, the dam blocked the Vajont River, creating an artificial basin. This alpine refuge stands on a beautiful clearing at an altitude of 1,457 surrounded by the Rocchetta Alta, the Sasso di Bosconero, the Sasso di Toanella and the Sfornioi. The structure, entrusted to the CAI of Val di Zoldo, is made up of 3 separate buildings in stone and wood (central nucleus, dormitories, teaching room). Since 2006 it has been a research center of the University of Padua, with an important study of eco-sustainable integrated management of urban solid waste and waste water. Reference point for beautiful excursions (stage of the Alta Via Dolomiti n. 3 and of the Zoldano ring) and for classic and modern rock ascents.
