Melk's town square forms the historic and vibrant center of the town. Surrounded by well-preserved house facades, cafés, and shops, it invites you to stroll and linger. Particularly striking is its proximity to Melk Abbey, which towers high above the square. As the town's central meeting place, the square regularly serves as the setting for markets, festivals, and cultural events, while also providing an ideal starting point for exploring the town and its surroundings.

The Counts of Beroldingen owned the castle until 1929, when they sold it to Count Oswald Seilern-Aspang. The family still owns the castle today.

Schönbühel Castle stands impressively on a rock above the Danube.

Unfortunately, it's privately owned and not open to the public. A few years ago, I wrote a blacksmithing report on the impressive window grilles and had access to the entire site for a day. It's a shame that some of the castles aren't accessible.

A superb stretch of road, the road conditions are still okay, but there's hardly any traffic. As of May 2025, the section from Gassen up to the bridge is closed, but you can get past the barriers and the road is easily accessible for cyclists.

Schönbühel Castle is located below Melk on the right bank of the Danube in the Lower Austrian municipality of Schönbühel-Aggsbach.
