The Visconti castle is the very emblem of Trezzo sull'Adda. It stands on a promontory surrounded by the river, a strategic position already intuited centuries earlier by the Lombards and has become increasingly important over the centuries. Frederick I, known as Barbarossa, built his fortress here in the 12th century. Bernabò Visconti died here on 19 December 1385 after imprisonment, poisoned with a plate of beans by his nephew Gian Galeazzo, who aspired to power.

From the 11th to the 16th century, other fortifications were added and the complex became a valuable outpost of the Duchy of Milan. In the second half of the twelfth century Frederick Barbarossa expanded the fortress and used it as one of his residences. Alessandro Taccani (1876-1947) was a young graduate in industrial engineering from the Istituto Tecnico Superiore in Milan, when Cristoforo Benigno Crespi involved him to build his hydroelectric plant along the Adda.
