The main street leads to the stairway that goes up to the village, here we find some historic villas, mostly abandoned. After stopping in front of the fountain, you go up in a spiral: Palazzo Pardi, dating back to the 18th century, is hidden behind the first bend, then you pass the staircase and after two more hairpin bends you reach the top. In the village, each panoramic point is characterized by a marble parapet. Near the cistern, at the highest point of the town, there is a terrace where you can stop to admire the coast on the border between Marche and Abruzzo.

Here Italy shows itself from its most beautiful side! The medieval town of Civitella del Tronto is located on a hilltop in the Monti della Laga. The Tronto river flows in the valley below. The narrow, partly cobbled streets are best explored on foot. At the highest point of the town sits an elongated fortress, which essentially dates back to the 19th century.

Thirsty from the climb. Stopped off at the cafe by the steps to the church.

Very beautiful old town with a magnificent view over Abruzzo to Gran Sasso. The climb is definitely worth it.

One of the few saints who is also highly valued outside of Christianity is San Francesco, known in the German-speaking world as Francis of Assisi. Francis was born in Assisi in 1181/82 and died in 1226. In his youth as the son of wealthy parents he was a bon vivant, but later he turned to Christ. In the half-ruined little church of San Damiano, on the hillside outside the city walls of Assisi, he was praying one day and heard the voice of Christ coming down from the cross, urging him to “rebuild his church”. At first he took this request literally and restored the church building, later he came to realize that this is primarily about the church as the community of believers. Francis became a role model for many people, they joined him and the "Order of the Friars Minor" (Ordo Fratrum Minorum) of Francis of Assisi came into being. Today in the broad Franciscan religious family there are three male branches: the Franciscans, the Minorites and the Capuchins; and two females: the Franciscans and the Poor Clares. In addition, there is the "Third" or "Secular" order, which women and men who do not take the classic vows of the order (poverty, chastity and obedience) and continue to live in their family and their profession can join.

The origins of the "San Francesco" church probably go back to around 1320, when the later Archbishop Robert von Anjou had a chapel built on this site. The church and the buildings belonging to it are of Romanesque origin, the church was extensively renovated and expanded in the 18th century and renovated again between 2000 and 2002. On the Romanesque facade there is a beautiful stone portal on which traces or remains of a popular fresco of the Madonna and Child as well as the Saints Francesco, Ludovico and Chiara can be seen. Above it is a beautiful rose window from the 14th century with folded leaves, which, according to popular tradition, comes from the Church of San Francesco in Campli. On the back wall of the church is the square bell tower. The baroque interior contains a valuable wooden choir from the 15th century. All in all a very worth seeing and especially impressive because of its age and the good state of preservation, which one should have visited.
