Maretsch Castle is located on the edge of Bolzano's old town, directly on the Talfer Promenade, making it ideally accessible by bike. The complex dates back to a 12th-century fortification and has been expanded several times. In the 15th century, the castle came into the possession of the Römer family, who remodeled it in the Renaissance style in the 1560s: round towers, an arcaded courtyard, and magnificent frescoes still characterize its appearance today. In the 17th to 19th centuries, the castle changed hands frequently, and for a time it served as an outbuilding. After serving as the state archive in the 20th century, it was restored and converted for cultural events in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, you can visit the historic halls, explore the castle courtyard, and enjoy the view of the vineyards and the Dolomites—ideal for a short break during a bike tour through Bolzano.

Sigmundskron Castle is located south of Bolzano, above the Adige River. The castle has changed hands and names several times over the centuries. Before Sigmundskron, the castle was called Firmian. The current owner, Reinhold Messner, also calls the castle ruins that, more precisely MMM Firmian (Messner Mountain Museum). The MMM is a project with six locations in Tyrol.
