The path to the Sanctuary of Oropa is a journey through nature, history, and spirituality: trails pass through ancient forests, hills, and charming villages, all the way up to the majestic Biella mountains. The itineraries, at times challenging, test your pace and endurance, but reward you with breathtaking views and the unique thrill of reaching one of Piedmont's most fascinating sacred sites.

A welcoming Walser refuge located in the historic village of Gròssò Albezò, with stone and wood buildings dating back to the 17th century. Renovated in 1992, it offers 20–24 beds in shared rooms for six and double rooms, with modern bathrooms in the adjacent stadel. Easy access via a trail (trail signpost no. 6 or "W"), about 1 hour from Chemonal (1,407 m) through larch forests and pastures, also ideal for families. Perfect as a stopover on the AV1 (between Gressoney and Vieux Crest) or as a base for hikes to Testa Grigia (3,315 m).

Very modern and comfortable refuge. Equipped with 24h electricity, wi-fi, hot water. The refuge is also a stop for the Oropa Valley walk. The Barma refuge is located at an altitude of 2060 meters in the Mont Mars nature reserve, located between the Biella area and the Lys Valley in the Aosta Valley. The stone structure is built around the roche moutonne in the center of an amphitheater overlooking the lakes of the same name at the foot of the Mont Mars massif (2600 m). The refuge is recently built and has a large bar, two dining rooms, eight rooms, five of which seat 8, two seat 4 and a double with bathroom. The services are shared. The structure is equipped with solar panels for the production of electricity, integrated with a co-generator system. The water is collected from the depths of the lake and treated with a water purifier so as to avoid the use of packaging to be disposed of.

Hill with gentle slopes and a short climb

The sanctuary of Oropa is a Marian sanctuary - dedicated to the Black Madonna - located a dozen kilometers north of the city of Biella, in the Oropa hamlet, at about 1,280 meters above sea level, in a natural amphitheater of mountains that surround the city below and are part of the Biella Alps. The sanctuary includes, in addition to a Sacred Mount (the Sacred Mount of Oropa), the original church built on the basis of an ancient shrine and the current sanctuary itself, equipped with various structures intended to accommodate the faithful and tourists. And it is also the Arrival of the Stage of the Giro d'Italia. The most famous one was in 1999 with the comeback of Marco Pantani who went on to win the Stage (Arrival dedicated to Him).

Oropa, definitely worth a visit. Not only is it fascinating in terms of history, but also because of the surrounding restaurants. And last but not least, the Black Madonna.
