The Hardau is a river about 17 km long in the Lüneburg Heath, in the municipalities of Suderburg and Uelzen, which flows through the Hardau valley, as seen here near Holdenstedt.

North of the castle, the church of St. Nicolai was rebuilt in the 17th century by the "lords of the castle" of Wense in the Baroque style, after the Romanesque predecessor church from 1010 had been largely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War.

At Heiligen Kreuz 26 stands the oldest surviving timber-framed house in Celle's old town. First mentioned in 1522, it is considered the oldest securely dated building within Celle's extensive collection of timber-framed buildings. It is a gable-fronted timber-framed house with a saddle roof, featuring stepped gables projecting from story to story and Gothic ornamentation in the gable area. It is a typical example of the early construction phase of Celle's old town, which spanned approximately 600 years. Celle boasts around 400 preserved timber-framed houses; this building marks the oldest dated structure. In 1910, a power plant was commissioned next to the sawmill, the first in the Uelzen district after the town of Uelzen. It supplied Wieren with 220 V direct current until 1950, and the neighboring town of Drohe until 1929. Eel fishing was plentiful at the weir between the mill and sawmill. During favorable (thunderstormy) weather and high water levels, up to 50 kg of eel were caught here at night. (Text by Walter Schröder)

The old watermill in the heart of the community has become known as the "Light Miracle of Wieren." First mentioned in 1330, it was an important milling site between Uelzen and Wittingen. In 1788, the mill building was rebuilt on its current site. Previously, the mill had stood on the site where the bridges now cross the floodplains. The front mill pond was also created at this time through the artificial embankment on the west side. The higher reservoir height enabled continuous milling.
