CHURCH OF THE MADONNA DEL ROTOLINO (or dell'arrotino) (1555) Small devotional chapel originally built in 1555 thanks to the efforts of the then governor of Vitorchiano Alessio Boccamazza. Located along the "piagge" road that led through the vegetable gardens to the countryside and the church of San Michele. The name derives from a miraculous event that happened to a knife-grinder who was passing by and who saw a large peperino stone (located near the chapel) fall on him and was miraculously saved by the protection of the Virgin Mary. Inside there was a stucco altar with an image of a Madonna with the child in her arms. Initially the church was in the care of the Community of Vitorchiano but around 1600 it passed under the protection of the parish. Having fallen into ruin during the 20th century, the chapel was rebuilt in 2003.

On the road to Grotte Santo Stefano there is a sacred Moai statue that originates from Easter Islands. The statue is about 10 m high and was made in the early 1990s. For this purpose, 11 members of the Maori Atan family came over from Easter Islands. They were followed for 4 weeks in a television programme on the RAI. The statue is the only one in the world that is located outside Easter Islands. The statue was made from a single piece of peperino stone. From this panoramic point you have a beautiful view of the old town of Vitorchiano, which is built entirely on a rock. In addition, your wish can come true if you touch the navel of the Moai with your hands…

It is a large boulder of shaped and carved peperino stone, located in a forest between Bomarzo and Chia; It was rediscovered in 2001 by the Archeotuscia association and the archaeological company Pro-Ferento. The structure has 26 steps carved into the volcanic rock, with a height of 8 meters in the upstream part and 16 meters in the downstream part. It is believed to have been an Etruscan rock altar, probably dating back to the 6th-7th century BC, although some hypotheses suggest even older origins.

"The statue was created in 1990 by eleven members of the Atan family, originally from Rapa Nui (Easter Island). The project was born during the RAI television program “Alla ricerca dell’arca” by journalist Mino d’Amato, with the aim of promoting the restoration of the Moai on Easter Island. Vitorchiano was chosen as the ideal location for the construction thanks to the presence of peperino, a volcanic stone similar to that used for the original Moai. The Atan craftsmen used the same traditional techniques, working with axes and stones to sculpt the monument.".

Civita di Bagnoregio is a magical, surreal, fantastic place, located on the top of a tuff hill and reachable only through a narrow pedestrian bridge from which you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of all of Lazio. Nicknamed the dying city, due to the constant erosion of the tuff rocks on which it is located, this citadel halfway between Orvieto and Lake Bolsena has Etruscan and medieval origins.

The little village of Civita di Bagnoregio is a place from another time. Accessible only by a pedestrian bridge, the place is inhabited by only a few people. Nevertheless, there are shelters in the abandoned city. The once proud city, which lies like a crown on the top of a tuff rock and which mainly attracts with beautiful medieval and partly antique buildings within its historic walls, was already considered a dying village in the 70s and 80s of the last century. At times no more than 5-12 people lived here. Back then, landslides were unsafe and regular house maintenance was too expensive. Civita di Bagnoregio is now considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Since it can only be reached via a pedestrian bridge and has therefore been completely spared from cars to this day, it offers a brief but intensive look right into the heart of Italy's history. In the early evening it gets quiet in the town, which is heavily frequented by tourists during the day. This is the best time to enjoy the historic city.

The Sacro Bosco known as Monster Park for the grotesque sculptures present is the oldest sculpture park in the modern world. Near Orsini, lord of Bomarzo, he built it starting from the middle of the 16th century. Overcoming the dominant idea of the Italian Renaissance garden, Vicino creates a work that is not easy to decipher, fitting into the new naturalistic architectural vision of the end of the Renaissance. Immersed in lush nature, the park takes the form of a hermeneutical labyrinth populated by symbolic sculptures that escape classical composure giving way to a Mannerist taste for the bizarre and the occult. A visit to the park is, however, a particularly interesting experience as it combines art, magic and literature whose references are not always decipherable.

Small medieval town with Etruscan and Roman remains. It is situated on a high tufa spur and is separated from the newer, younger town of Bagnoregio by a deep gorge. From the east end of this town there are great views of the valley, the gorge, the impressive backdrop of Civita on the towering ridge, and the pedestrian bridge over the gorge, which provides exciting access to the old town through an ancient city gate. Civita di Bagnoregio was one of the "dying cities" due to its exposed location and erosion problems and at times had hardly any residents. A Roman ex-manager and numerous dropouts and nature enthusiasts discovered the place and revived it by buying up and renovating the abandoned building ruins "Today, the place has also become a holiday home for artists. Concerts in the church provide additional impetus. Cafes and restaurants, a small hotel and a souvenir shop have been set up in the renovated buildings. The remaining original inhabitants of the village present their house and garden as well as an underground one Cave dwelling for a voluntary contribution from the tourists.Unfortunately it can get very crowded at times!

Given its shape, it could recall a religious altar, but it is really an ancient and mysterious pyramid discovered only in 1911.

Civita di Bagnoregio is called "the dying city" because it stands on a clayey hill which has been subjected to severe erosion for centuries due to atmospheric phenomena and crumbles slowly and inexorably. The town is now almost totally uninhabited, but can be visited safely.

The Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo is the oldest sculpture park in the modern world. It was conceived in the 16th century by the architect Pirro Ligorio on commission from Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, lord of Bomarzo. The Sacro Bosco is also known as the Monster Park for the presence of sculptures depicting mythological animals, divinities and monsters scattered in a surreal natural landscape.

🗿🙃🗿 “Mom, there is a monster in our garden!” – “No, honey – there are dozens of them!” This is how one could imagine a dialogue between mother and child among the Orsinis. However, the marriage probably remained childless, so there was never a dialogue and Pier Francesco Orsini, scion of a well-known noble family, had to look for other options to burn money. In 1552 the time had come: over the next 30 years, volcanic peperin rock was transformed into sculptures the height of a man and a house, until the Sacro Bosco (Sacred Forest) was completed. After his death, the complex fell into oblivion and the now weathered sculptures were not rediscovered until the middle of the 20th century. Abandoned for centuries, the forest became popularly known as the Park of Monsters (Italian: Parco dei Mostri). 🏴‍☠️🤪🏴‍☠️ What Francesco Orsini intended with the Monster Park and what the characters are supposed to say is still a mystery. Maybe it's all just a game of deception; on the Ertruscan bench he had engraved: "Voi che pel mondo gite errando vaghi di veder meraviglie alte et stupende" - You who wander in the world, greedy for great and glorious wonders, come here... 👀🗿👀 So we look at the huge Proteus-Glauco from afar, get up close to the monumental sculpture of the fighting giants Hercules and Caco, puzzle over the female figure on a turtle and can assign Pegasus. I don't want to list all the sculptures that can be found north of the crooked house (Casa Pendente). I do want to mention one, however: the Orcus. A man's huge head petrified in a scream of terror. Through the gaping jaws of the Orcus, one enters a dark chamber where a table and a stone bench await the visitor. By the way, the sculpture always reminds me of the King Crimson album cover: “In The Court Of The Crimson King. https://images.app.goo.gl/X4bbcSPL42tR6cFf8
