On the outskirts of Perugia, there are many places where cycle and pedestrian paths have been created. This is one of the most interesting, winding for a few kilometers between San Sisto, Castel del Piano, and Capanne, almost joining the old railway road to Tavernelle, now converted into a cycle path.

Located near the village of Spina, the Rocca di Sant'Apollinare is a place rich in history and timeless images. Once a defensive fortress, it became a place of worship and production, and today it is immersed in a centuries-old olive grove. Getting there requires a bit of effort, but the reward is guaranteed.

On the journey to Todi, a stop took us to Cibottola Castle, just 1 km from the crossroads. Situated at 471 meters, it is a small castle built before the 10th century, occupying a strategic position overlooking the Nestore Valley. Important since the 13th century for its pietra serena quarries, it was fortified in the 14th century and welcomed Braccio da Montone in 1416 before the conquest of Perugia. Today, the entrance gate with a drawbridge and a 20-meter-high heptagonal tower remain, restored in the late 20th century and converted into a civic tower.

The Ellera-Tavernelle railway was a single-track, non-electrified railway line that connected the Ellera-Corciano station, on the Foligno-Terontola line, with Tavernelle, running along the Nestore river valley. Since the planned extension to Chiusi (on the Florence-Rome railway) was never built, the line always remained an isolated section, and was decommissioned after only 7 years from its activation. Now there remain the sections that are used by pedestrians and cyclists, with MTB and Gravel.

In the wake of the old Ellera Pietrafitta railway, many dirt paths connect the hamlets and villages of the countryside. This point is right near Castiglione della Valle, near the sports facility

A hamlet located on a hill between the Nestore and Caina rivers. The castle, built shortly after the year 1000, is very characteristic and well worth a visit.
