The territory of Acquapendente is located in the far north of Lazio, bordering the regions of Tuscany (whose borders are partly marked by Lake San Casciano ) and Umbria. The municipality is just over 10 km from Lake Bolsena. The Via Cassia passes through the town. It shares with Picinisco, San Vittore del Lazio, Cittareale and Accumoli the distinction of being one of five municipalities in Lazio whose municipal territory borders more than one region other than its own. Acquapendente owes its name to its location near numerous small waterfalls that flow into the Paglia River. Mount Rufeno rises within the municipality , where the Monte Rufeno nature reserve was established on the opposite bank of the Paglia River.

The Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve is a small, little-known gem of biodiversity in northern Lazio. Within its boundaries are several farmhouses inhabited by farmers until about 50 years ago.

The overnight stay at the Castello was THE highlight of our trip. It was quirky and unique, as the elderly countess also gave a private tour of her castle. A fortified castle with 1,000 years of history, it's privately run. The rooms are furnished as they were 100 years ago, but with a private bathroom. The pool, like the restaurant, is set in an "enchanted" castle park. The restaurant is excellent, as the countess also serves and, alongside the staff, looks after the guests. The whole experience is quirky and unique.

Acquapendente is not just a stop on the old Via Francigena. Located in the province of Viterbo between Lazio and Tuscany, it is in fact one of the centers of great tourist interest of Tuscia. Born around the parish church of Santa Vittoria between the 9th and 10th centuries along the Via Francigena, the small village developed quickly and was a place of important passage and crossroads of people and trade. Well worth a visit are the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, in which a stone is stained with blood from the Tomb of Christ, the City Museum, the Flower Museum and the castle of Torre Alfina. Among the most traditional, widespread and renowned economic activities are those of craftsmanship, such as the art of ceramics and terracotta.

The Porta del Lazio is a valuable monumental wooden artifact located exactly at the crossing point between the two regions, symbolizing Lazio's welcome to travelers coming from Tuscany along the Francigena. Visible from a great distance, it will certainly represent an important point of admiration for a landscape whose beauty is difficult to describe.

“Pro custodia palatii nostri” is a Latin expression that means “for the guarding of our palace”. This term is historically significant because it was used by Pope Julius II in 1505 when he ordered Peter von Hertenstein to lead 200 Swiss soldiers to Rome to guard the Papal Palace. This event marks the creation of the Swiss Guard, which is still responsible for the Pope's security.
